Rio is an American animated family film in 3D from Blue Sky Studios and was produced in co-production with 20th Century Fox . The film was released in German cinemas on April 7, 2011.

The last two Spix's Macaws are supposed to ensure the continued existence of their species. The male Blu grew up in captivity and is unable to fly; the female Jewel was saved from smugglers. The first time they meet, they are captured again by smugglers. They can escape, but have to fight their way through Rio de Janeiro , chained together .

action

The main character Blu is the last male of his genus, the Spix's Macaw , who was brought from his home in Rio de Janeiro by smugglers as a young and now lives with the bookseller Linda in Minnesota . One day ornithologist Tulio comes to the small town of Moose Lake and explains to Linda that Blu is needed to save his species. This agrees and flies with Blu to Rio de Janeiro.

Once there, Blu comes to an aviary with his last conspecific, freedom-loving, rebellious Jewel, whose thoughts have nothing to do with saving their species, but solely with escape. At night, the two macaws are stolen by the street boy Fernando with the help of the yellow-hooded cockatoo Nigel and brought to bird smugglers. From there they can escape, although Blu Jewel has to admit that they never learned to fly. With the help of the giant toucan Rafael, whom they meet in the jungle, they make their way to Luiz, a bulldog who is supposed to help get rid of the chains with which Jewel and Blu are chained together, so that they can part ways again.

On the way they meet the gray cardinal Pedro and his friend, the yellow-bellied girl Nico, who will accompany them from now on. Rafael, Pedro and Nico keep trying to bring the dissimilar couple together. The head of the smugglers' gang doesn't want to let the animals go under any circumstances because they want to get rich. So he sends Nigel to catch her again.

During the film, Blu has to face an inner conflict (whether Minnesota can be his true home), a gang of thieving marmoset monkeys and his fear of flying. After reaching Luiz and loosening the chains, Jewel flies high in the air and whirls around with the others, while Blu can only watch them from the ground. Then he storms away in frustration, with Jewel trying to stop him. There is an argument. They pull in opposite directions. Jewel, who wants to fly far away in order to suppress her pain, is picked up in the air by Nigel and immediately taken to the bird smugglers. The eyewitnesses Nico and Pedro, who immediately fly to Blu, who, accompanied by Rafael, is looking for his owner Linda, tell him about the kidnapping. Blu immediately rushes with Pedro, Nico, Rafael and Luiz to the rescue of his girlfriend, who is being held in a parade wagon in the hustle and bustle of the carnival . There they run into Linda and Tulio, disguised as Spix's macaws, which Blu and Jewel suspected to be here. However, Blu decides to free Jewel first.

Blu and his feathered friends, however, are also captured and, locked in cages, loaded onto a small plane at the airfield. Linda, who has stolen a parade wagon and rushes to the airport with Tulio, is seconds late and the plane takes off. On the way, Blu can break into his cages and the cages of the other trapped animals, as he has no difficulty opening any locking devices. The birds can all flee while Blu and Jewel are still held up by Nigel. Jewel's wings are broken during the final fight in which Blu finally defeats Nigel. The now flightless Jewel falls from the plane, Blu jumps after her out of love and manages in the last few meters before the impact to spread his wings and save himself and Jewel by finally flying.

With Jewel in his claws he flies back to the airfield, where Linda is still sobbing in Tulio's arms; she had already lost all hope. In the end, Linda stays with Tulio in Rio, they take Fernando in and work together as animal rights activists. Blu and Jewel have now started a family.

“Rio should be a lot of fun, especially for children, just because of the blaze of colors and the music. The birds also turn out to be very lovable characters and encourage people to cheer. But older cinema-goers can also chat here. Of course, the story is more tailored to younger visitors and some developments may lead to disgruntlement when viewed critically, but if you would like to see a nice, easily digestible, colorful film and also like to hear samba rhythms, you're off with Rio under no circumstances bad advice. "

- MovieMaze

“The animated film directed by Ice Age director Carlos Saldanha impresses with its cautiously used 3D effects, fast-paced action scenes, original characters and a rousing soundtrack. [...] Conclusion: These birds of paradise have the rhythm in their blood - perfect entertainment for the whole family "

“Figures and scenery may be new, but the playful handling of the likeable characters, the lovable humor and the sophisticated action sequences, which are in the tradition of slapstick, reveal Saldanha as a lover of classic cartoons. Scary is its villain. [...] The combination of human and animal figures, four-legged friends and poultry, the drawn people play on the wall and always have the laughs on their side is not entirely successful. […] The long shots of the city, including Sugar Loaf, Christ statue and Copacabana, are nice to look at - the 'scenes' are ideally used, even the cable car to the Pão de Açúcar is integrated into the plot.
