Roberto Payró

Roberto Jorge Payró (born April 19, 1867 in Mercedes , Gran Buenos Aires , † April 8, 1928 in Lomas de Zamora , Partido Lomas de Zamora ) was an Argentine writer and journalist.

Life

Payró was the founder of the daily newspaper “La Tribuna” in the city of Bahía Blanca , where he had previously published his first newspaper articles. After moving to Buenos Aires , he worked as an editor for the daily La Nación and also used this time to travel inside and outside Argentina.

In 1895 he published a compilation of his articles in the book "Los italianos en la Argentina". His travel diaries led to his first novels: "La Australia Argentina (Excursión periodística a las costas patagónicas)", "Tierra del Fuego e Islas de los Estados" and "En las tierras del Inti". He also wrote for Caras y Caretas, a literary journal edited by Fray Mocho .

During the First World War, Payró was a correspondent in Europe. Here he had regular contact with other socialist writers, including Leopoldo Lugones , José Ingenieros and Ernesto de la Cárcara . Back in Argentina, he joined the socially critical Grupo Boedo , of which Roberto Arlt was the best-known member .

Payró's novels are characterized by a unique ironic style of language. He used types of people and everyday situations to portray the life of Italian immigrants. In “Divertidas aventuras del nieto de Juan Moreira” he tells of the political career of a provincial. Payró also wrote historical novels such as “El falso Inca, una serie de cuentos publicados bajo el nombre de Pago Chico”. His last work, "Nuevos cuentos de Pago Chico", appeared only after his death.
