Paolo Sorrentino (born May 31, 1970 in Naples ) is an Italian screenwriter , film director and writer .

Life

Sorrentino became famous in Germany with his film Il Divo , in which part of the life of the multiple Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti and his alleged Mafia connections are portrayed. He worked several times with the leading actor Toni Servillo on his film projects.

In 2010 Sorrentino made his first English-language film, Cheyenne - This Must Be the Place , starring Sean Penn in the lead role of an aging rock musician who goes in search of the tormentor of his late Jewish father, a concentration camp guard who went underground in the USA. The film, which was released in German cinemas in November 2011, celebrated its international premiere in 2011 in the competition at the 64th Cannes International Film Festival . His film La Grande Bellezza - The Great Beauty won the Oscar and the Golden Globe in the category Best Foreign Language Film as well as four European Film Awards in 2014 .

In La Grande Bellezza - The great beauty followed Sorrentino's second English-language film Eternal Youth (Youth) , who with Michael Caine , Rachel Weisz , Jane Fonda and Harvey Keitel occupied prominent and 2015 was released. Like La Grande Bellezza - The Great Beauty Before, Eternal Youth was also awarded the European Film Prize in the categories of Best Film and Best Director .

In 2016 he was invited to the 73rd Venice Film Festival with the first two episodes of the English-language television miniseries The Young Pope . It tells the fictional story of the American Lenny Belardo, played by Jude Law , who as Pius XIII is elected the first American pope and upsets the structures of the Vatican.

In 2017 Sorrentino was appointed to the competition jury of the 70th Cannes Film Festival . In the same year it became known that a renewed collaboration with Toni Servillo is planned. In the film Loro , the actor embodies Italy's ex-prime minister and media entrepreneur Silvio Berlusconi .

In 2019 it was announced that Sorrentino would collaborate with Jennifer Lawrence in his next film . The actress will slip into the role of Arlyne Brickman, an informant about the US Mafia , in Mob Girl , the adaptation of the same book by Teresa Carpenter .

The New Pope, a sequel to the TV series The Young Pope, has been announced for 2020 . Again the first two episodes were shown at an international film festival, this time at the 76th Venice Film Festival . The New Pope is slated to air on Sky Atlantic from January 2020. On December 10, 2019, HBO released the first trailer for the new series, which shows John Malkovich in the robes of the new Pope.
