Robin Lehner (born July 24, 1991 in Gothenburg ) is a Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Vegas Golden Knights in the National Hockey League since February 2020 . Previously, he was in the NHL for the Ottawa Senators , Buffalo Sabers , New York Islanders and Chicago Blackhawks .
Career
Robin Lehner began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Frölunda HC , for whose U18 and U20 juniors he was active between 2006 and 2009. He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2009 in the second round as a total of 46th player by the Ottawa Senators . Initially, however, the goalkeeper ran for Sault Ste in the 2009/10 season . Marie Greyhounds , who had selected him as the ninth player in the 2009 CHL Import Draft , in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League . In his 47 appearances in the regular season, he was able to convince with an average goal against 2.80 per game and a catch rate of 91.8 percent. He also got five shutouts . The 2009/10 season ended the Swede with the Binghamton Senators , the farm team of his draft team from Ottawa, in the American Hockey League and came to two missions by the end of the season.
In the 2010/11 season Lehner initially played mainly as a substitute goalkeeper for Binghamton in the AHL. He also made his debut for the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League on October 16, 2010 at the away game with the Canadiens de Montréal . In addition, he was in the further course of the season seven more times for Ottawa in the NHL between the posts. In the playoffs for the Calder Cup , Lehner ousted the previous goalkeeper of Senators Barry Brust thanks to his convincing performance . The Swede played a total of 18 matches for the Binghamton Senators in the finals and, with a catch quota of 93.9 percent, played a key role in the team's first Calder Cup win. Following the final series, the goalkeeper was awarded the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs.
After five years in Ottawa, the Senators gave him to the Buffalo Sabers in the run-up to the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, including David Legwand , and in return received Buffalo's first-round voting rights for this draft. There he was on the ice for three years before his expiring contract was not renewed in the summer of 2018, so that he joined the New York Islanders as a free agent in July 2018 . There he formed together with Thomas Greiss the goalkeeper duo with the fewest goals conceded in the NHL, so that both were awarded the William M. Jennings Trophy . In addition, the Swede received the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in recognition of the fact that he made his alcoholic illness and bipolar disorder public, underwent therapy and at the same time campaigned against the stigma of mental illness. A little later he was also honored with the guldpuck as the best Swedish player of the year.
In early July 2019, Lehner signed a one-year contract as a free agent with a salary of five million US dollars with the Chicago Blackhawks . However , the Blackhawks gave it to the Vegas Golden Knights by the trade deadline in February 2020 . In return, Chicago received Malcolm Subban , Slava Demin and a second-round vote for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft . Although the Blackhawks continued to take over 50% of Lehner's salary, this was not enough to keep the Golden Knights under the salary cap , so the Toronto Maple Leafs acted as a third party. They sent Mārtiņš Dzierkals to Las Vegas and received a five-round vote in the 2020 draft for their participation in Lehner's salary with 22% from now on.
International
For Sweden , Lehner took part in the junior division of the U18 World Junior Championship in 2009 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2011 . In 2016 he was appointed to the Swedish selection at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , but canceled due to an injury.
