Roger Roebben (born March 14, 1951 ) is a former Belgian football player .

Career

Roebben was brought to the Lower Rhine by VV Waltwilder in 1974 by the then head coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach , Hennes Weisweiler . The first message was in “Kicker” on March 18, 1974, before the headline on April 18: “Hennes brings Belgians. The new goalscorer is Roger Roebben. ”It was also reported that the foreigner who successfully participated in training for a week in March has now finally presented himself with his papers. He comes from Hasselt / Beverst (Belgium) and has so far played at Waltwilder VV as an amateur. Weisweiler expects a lot from his attacking skills: In the training game against Borussia's defense in March, he scored five goals. On July 4, 1974, however, it was reported via the "Kicker" that Roebben had to undergo meniscus surgery before starting preparations. On August 16, it was still possible to read in “Kicker” that Hennes Weisweiler raved about the first performance of the striker from Hasselt after the meniscus operation. “It will be one. When he has full competition practice again, he can represent Bernd Rupp worthily! ”Since at that time only two foreigners were allowed to play in a Bundesliga team, and these places were occupied by Allan Simonsen and Henning Jensen , Roebben did not play a single competitive game for Borussia . Simonsen had only had nine missions with two goals in the 1973/74 season; In Roebben's first year at Borussia, however, he was promoted to Bökelbergelf with 34 appearances and 18 goals and formed an extremely dangerous attack with Jensen and Jupp Heynckes .

Roebben was only used in friendly games, where he also scored several goals. So he was also used in the anniversary game (75 years) of 1. FC Nürnberg in May 1975 as a substitute for Herbert Wimmer in the second half. After Weisweiler left the club, Roebben was eliminated from the squad under Udo Lattek . Roebben then left Borussia and joined the Belgian first division club Lierse SK . After two years he left the club in the direction of FK Tongeren , where he became a regular.
