Rolf Große (born March 13, 1958 in Bardenberg ) is a German historian .

Rolf Große studied history, Latin philology and historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Cologne . Große received his doctorate in 1984 under Odilo Engels and Erich Meuthen at the University of Cologne. There he was a research assistant from 1984 to 1987. Since 1987 he has been a research assistant at the German Historical Institute Paris (DHIP). In 2001 he completed his habilitation at Heidelberg University and was awarded the Venia legendi for medieval history and historical auxiliary sciences. Since 2007 he has been an adjunct professor at Heidelberg University. At DHIP, Große is head of the Medieval Department, head of Gallia Pontificia, editor-in-chief of Francia and editor of the studies and documents on Gallia Pontificia. Große is a corresponding member of the Central Management of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica (since 2009) and a corresponding honorary member of the Société des antiquaires de France (since 2011).

His research interests are Western Europe in the High Middle Ages, Franco-German relations, the national history of the Île-de-France , the Saint-Denis abbey and the diplomacy of the older papal charter. In his dissertation he dealt with the diocese of Utrecht and its bishops in the 10th and early 11th centuries. In contrast to the research held that the diocese and the Ottonians worked closely together , Grosse came to the conclusion that the bishops of Utrecht “in the 10th and early 11th centuries were by no means reliable pillars of the ruler” and that they had “because of their self-image on the side of the opposition ”. On the occasion of the 1200th anniversary of Charlemagne's death, an international conference on the topic of “Charlemagne. Les temps, les espaces, les hommes. Construction et déconstruction d'un règne ”took place at the German Historical Institute in Paris. The anthology with almost 30 contributions was published in 2018 by Große and Michel Sot.
