RuhrKunstMuseen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The RuhrKunstMuseen , also known as the RKM , are a network of twenty museums in the Ruhr area , which was founded on the occasion of the year of the Capital of Culture and with the support of Ruhr.2010 , but which should continue to exist beyond that.

The majority of the museums focus on the art of the 20th century and the present, the art of the 19th century as well as old and non-European art are represented in individual houses with significant holdings. From Duisburg to Hamm, from Hagen to Marl, a coherent network of collections extends over 15 cities, housed in buildings of industrial culture, castles, architecture from the post-war decades and new buildings. A visit to the museums is also a representative foray into the building culture of the Ruhr area.

The cooperation of the RuhrKunstMuseen makes it clear which holdings of modern and contemporary art the Ruhr museum landscape has.

Participating museums

20 art museums in the Ruhr area together form the RuhrKunstMuseen .

Common projects

In 2010 the RuhrKunstMuseen carried out their first joint exhibition project "Mapping the Region" . The fourteen exhibitions in the museums and at other exhibition locations are under the curatorial direction of the individual museums and each show a common theme in order to capture the region. The term "mapping" is meant both cartographically and artistically. The range of exhibitions ranges from installations (multi-part exhibitions "Liquid Area" in the Flottmann-Hallen and the Städtische Galerie Herne) to photographs ("Über Tage" from the pixel project in the Ruhr area , "Mines and Huts" by Bernd and Hilla Becher ) and Painting ("World Views: Landscapes in Art"), sound installations ("Electrical Walks" by Christina Kubisch ) and light objects ( Mischa Kuball "New Pott. 100 Lights / 100 Faces") to experimental art ("Hacking the City" des Museum Folkwangs with venues in the city of Essen and the Internet).

In addition, the museums offer an educational program in the form of three different bus tours, called "Collection Tours" . The "Twice Art and Back" tours are aimed at students of all ages and types of school. For each school class, one museum visit on two days with a common theme is on the program, one museum at home and one by bus. Thanks to sponsorship from Deutsche Bank, these tours are free for the students. The program is designed for a capacity of 20,000 students in 100 schools in the Ruhr area. The "East / West" tours are aimed at adult visitors; three museums are visited in one day. An art mediator guides you through the exhibitions and provides background information on the bus trips. The "Travel Conversations" tours lead to selected exhibitions of the "Mapping the Region" projects. In addition to the art mediator, an expert from another specialist field (e.g. architect, philosopher, artist or spatial planner) is also present here. These tours have a capacity of 3,000 participants.

The RuhrKunstMuseen have published a joint collection guide as a self-portrait, which on around 270 pages shows a description of the museums and their collections as well as photographs of selected masterpieces as well as the exhibition rooms and the architecture.

The joint work of the museums in the form of exhibition projects, educational programs and public relations work is intended to test and establish long-term forms of cooperation. The goal is to build a permanent joint organization beyond 2010.

In 2012, the RuhrKunstMuseen published the illustrated book PUBLIC ART RUHR with 100 works of art by 100 artists in the public space of the Ruhr Metropolis as part of the program of the same name they initiated . RUHR SELECTION - The Art Travel Guide for the Ruhr Metropolis was published in 2013 .

Since 2013, the RuhrKunstMuseen have been organizing the restoration of works of art in public spaces and their subsequent public revelation as part of their Public Art Ruhr New Revelations series.
