history

Werberg is mentioned indirectly for the first time in 1260. In a document there is talk of a "Fridericus de Werberg". The castle was built to protect Fulda against incursions from the Würzburg and robber barons. The castle was the official seat of the Werberg office until 1403 .

Two sieges of the castle are known: Hermann von Henneberg conquered the castle in 1351, before Prince Abbot Heinrich von Fulda recaptured it in 1403 after the castle had degenerated into a robber baron under the Hutts . The castle was destroyed in 1444 because raids were not omitted despite the peace treaty. A blide was used in at least one siege .

Today the castle ruins are listed as a monument D-6-72-163-36 "Werberg castle ruins, wall remains of a former castle to protect the Fulda border areas, probably built in 1327, destruction in 1444" and as a ground monument D-6-5624-0023 "Underground parts of the late medieval castle ruins Werberg ”recorded by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation .

All that remains of the castle are around 1.5 meter high wall remains and a neck ditch .
