After the end of the Second World War in 1945, Wildflecken belonged to the American zone of occupation . The American military administration set up a DP camp in the former prisoner of war camp to accommodate so-called displaced persons (DP), the majority of whom were Poles from today's Ukraine . The camp was looked after by UNRRA from October 1945 and then from 1947 by the IRO . The camp, in which at times more than 17,000 people lived, was closed in 1951. In Wildflecken there is a Polish cemetery for deceased camp residents.

coat of arms

Blazon : Over a silver shield base, inside two crossed red maces, in red a growing silver hunter with golden hair, in his right hand a golden horn, in his left hand holding a silver clearing ax with a golden style.

Coat of arms history: The once independent communities Wildflecken and Markt Oberbach merged in 1978 to form the community of Markt Wildflecken. The two communities were clearing settlements in the early 16th century, which were founded by the forestry masters of Lebenhan with the approval of the prince-bishop in Würzburg in the so-called salt forest. It was charcoal burners, hunters and forest workers who were the first to settle there. The figure of the hunter shown in the coat of arms and the clearing ax indicate this. The maces come from the coat of arms of the forest masters of Lebenhan and draw attention to their importance for the community
.

It has existed since May 1997 and is mainly used for environmental education. The exhibition in the house and in the outdoor areas gives insights into the biodiversity of the mountain meadows and the development of the Rhön cultural landscape . The information center, to which a tourist information office and a regional goods store are connected, is operated by the Association for Nature Park and Biosphere Reserve Bayerische Rhön e. V.

On October 29, 2000, the viewing gallery Grube Marie was opened on the Großer Auersberg near Wildflecken-Oberbach. The show tunnel tells the history of mining in the Rhön, where barite , also called barite, was extracted, a mineral that is used in the paint industry and for radiation protection. Barite was mined for around 100 years until operations were discontinued in October 1970 due to a lack of profitability. All tunnels were closed and blown up for safety reasons. In 1999 the idea for the visual gallery project was born. It shows the construction of a tunnel underground, the construction of a heavy spar wall, the laying of a track for tipping lorries and the mining tools used by the miners.
