Rumen Georgiev Radew ( Bulgarian Румен Георгиев Радев ; born June 18, 1963 in Dimitrovgrad ) is the President of Bulgaria . He is Major General of the Reserve and won the runoff election for President of Bulgaria in 2016 . Radew has been in office since January 22, 2017.

Life

Rumen Radew graduated from Haskovo Mathematics School in 1982 . In 1987 he joined the Bulgarian Air Force with the 15th Fighter Regiment and was trained as a fighter pilot at the Rawnez Air Force Base near Burgas . In 1992 he made additional training at the Squadron Officer School (SOS) at Maxwell Air Force Base in the USA. From 1994 to 1996 he studied at the military academy " Georgi Rakowski " in Sofia, where he graduated as the best of the year. He then was the squadron commander of MiG-29 fighter aircraft at the 5th fighter base in Rawnez. From 1999 to 2000 he was deputy commander of flight training at the 3rd fighter pilot base at Graf Ignatievo Air Base near Plovdiv .

In 2000 he received a doctorate in military science and was promoted to lieutenant colonel. From 2002 to 2003 he was again in the USA at Air War College . From 2005 to 2009 he was the commander of the 3rd fighter pilot base at the Graf Ignatiewo air base near Plovdiv .

In 2007 he was promoted to brigadier general. From 2009 to 2014 he was deputy commander and from 2014, with the rank of major general, commander of the Air Force .

Political positions

In the second round of the presidential election in November 2016, Radew received a majority of votes in all parts of the country.

Radew joined the Bulgarian Socialist Party as an independent in 2016 and is considered pro-Russian . He won the election against his main opponent Zezka Zacheva with 59.37% of the vote.
