Career

Čaputová studied law at the Comenius University in Bratislava . She graduated in 1996. After completing her academic training, she worked for a number of years in the regional authority of the small town of Pezinok , first as a member of the legal department and later on the management committee of the city administration. In 2010 she founded a law firm.

Between 2001 and 2017, Čaputová worked with Via Iuris, a civil organization, as a lawyer (since 2010). In Pezinok, she was at the forefront of a public campaign against allowing another landfill to be allowed for more than ten years. Against amnesties that Vladimír Mečiar had enforced, she stood up with the non-governmental organization Open Society Foundations . Following a petition against the amnesties, Parliament backed down and dropped it. In 2016, Čaputová received the Goldman Environmental Prize for its environmental protection activities .
