Two candidates, József Menyhárt and Róbert Mistrík , gave up their candidacy before the first ballot, but were still on the ballot for election. Three candidates (Radovan Znášik, Ján Molnár and Martin Konečný) were not allowed to stand for election by the parliamentary speaker Andrej Danko .

In addition to the incumbent Andrej Kiska, other potential candidates rejected the candidacy. In addition to then Prime Minister Robert Fico , who declared in December 2017 that he would not stand for election, this was also announced by MEP Pál Csáky , former Prime Minister Iveta Radičová , OĽaNO MP Veronika Remišová and the chairman of the Slovak National Party Andrej Danko.

The strongest ruling party, Smer - sociálna demokracia, wanted to register Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák as a candidate, but he rejected the candidacy several times.
