Sir Run Run Shaw CBE ( Chinese  邵逸夫 , Pinyin Shào Yìfū , Jyutping Siu 6 Jat 6 fu 1 ; born November 23, 1907 in Ningbo ; † January 7, 2014 in Hong Kong ) was a Chinese film producer of Hong Kong films . He produced more than 200 films.

Life

Run Run Shaw was one of seven children of the Shanghai textile merchant Shaw Yuh Hsuen ( 邵玉軒  /  邵玉轩 , Shào Yùxuān , Jyutping Siu 6 Juk 6 hin 1 ) (1867-1920).

At the age of 19 he followed his brother Runme Shaw ( 邵 仁 枚 , Shào Rénméi , Jyutping Siu 6 Jan 4 mui 4 ) to Singapore to set up a film market and the Shaw Organization ( 邵氏 兄弟 公司 ). In the following years he developed a great interest in the film business. With his brother he founded the South Seas Film Studio ( 南洋 影片 公司 ) in 1930 . Initially, the studio released Chinese opera films ; In 1934 they founded an office in Hong Kong , Unique Film Productions ( 天一 影業  /  天一 影业 ). In 1958, the Shaw Brothers Productions ( 邵氏 兄弟 (香港) 有限公司 ) in Sai Kung , Hong Kong. When in 1967 the film The One-Armed Swordsman ( 獨臂 刀  /  独臂 刀 ) achieved international success, a wave of martial arts productions began that reached the European and American markets; up to 40 films were presented each year. In the same year Shaw founded the first commercially free private television company in Hong Kong, today's Television Broadcasts Limited , TVB for short ( 電視廣播 有限公司  /  电视广播 有限公司 , kurz  /  无线电视 for short , 無綫  /  无线 ) in the immediate vicinity of the Shaw Brothers Productions production site. Shaw Studios produced until 1987.

Over the years, he has donated billions of Hong Kong dollars to charities and institutions such as schools, universities and hospitals. Because of his generous donations, his name is on many buildings in Hong Kong. The Shaw Prize, which he donated, has been awarded annually since 2004 .

Shaw has been married twice; with Wong Mei Chun from 1937 until her death 50 years later. In 1997 he married Mona Fong Yat-wa.
