Around Düren

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rund um Düren cycle race is a one-day race that takes place in Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The race was part of the UCI Europe Tour racing calendar from 2005 to 2006 . The competition was classified in category 1.2 and will take place in mid-April. The race is also part of the International German Championship for men in the U23 category . The event is organized by the Düren eV cycling club

The course of the race takes the drivers over about 160 kilometers through the northern Eifel between Aachen and Cologne . In Düren, a circuit then has to be lapped four times. Due to its location in April and the very different microclimates in the Eifel, the course of the race is often characterized by a high degree of weather-related drama.

So the winner of the Youth A (today Juniors) of 1972, Dietrich Thurau , arrived in the driving snow on the home straight in Düren. The amateur winner from 1977, Daniel Willems , even had to be brought directly from the award ceremony to the Düren hospital in order to prevent permanent damage from frostbite to his feet.

The record winner of the event is the two-time German Olympic participant Wilfried Trott with a total of three victories.

The start and finish have been in Kreuzau since 2011 .
