The Sporting Club de Bastia is a French football club based in Bastia on the island of Corsica . The club was founded in 1905; after a merger (1962) it was called the Sporting Étoile Club Bastia (SEC) until 1987 . He plays at the Stade Armand Césari, better known as the Stade Furiani. After decades of membership in the 1st and 2nd French professional league, the club was forcibly transferred to the 5th league due to bankruptcy in 2017. After two promotions, SC Bastia will play professionally again in the National (D3) (3rd division) in the 2020/21 season .
history
Foundation (1905–1914)
In 1905 Hans Ruesch, a Swiss professor of German at the grammar school in Bastia, founded SC Bastia together with Emile Brandizi and Joachim Vincensini , who together signed the three founding papers . After the founding, Emile Brandizi became the first president of the new association. At that time, SC Bastia was a sports club in which, in addition to soccer, athletics, boxing and wrestling were practiced. Three years after it was founded in 1908, Joachim Vincensini inherited the post from Emile Brandizi, who retired due to illness and died of it in 1914.
At Easter in 1911, SC Bastia received its first opponents in the Piccioni Challenge . Bastia played against two formations from Ajaccio . After that, there were more and more matches against teams from other Corsican cities to popularize football in Corsica. However, the outbreak of World War I slowed down the undertaking.
Beginnings and advancement (1919–1935)
In 1919 Touissaint Maestracci became the new president of SC Bastia. A year later, on May 31, 1920, the SC Bastia received its approval as a sports club. Charles Guitton then became the new president. The games of SC Bastia were now played on the Place Saint Nicolas .
From 1921 onwards, SC Bastia was the first club to play in the newly founded Ligue Corse de Football Association (LCFA). The French Football Association (then FFFA) officially recognized SC Bastia and the league on August 1, 1921.
Joseph Cesari, the father of Armand and Jean-Marie Cesari, became the new president of SC Bastia in 1922, and under his leadership SC Bastia did not win a single trophy in the following years.
In 1925 the SC Bastia merged with the Olympic Bastiais . Louis Orenga then became the sixth president of the club. in the following season (1925/26), SC Bastia won the Corsican League and the Corsican Cup for the first time. SC Bastia succeeded in this endeavor in the four years that followed. Seven years in a row, by 1932, Bastia won the LCFA and five times the Coupe de Corse.
In 1926 important members of Bastia bought the "Campaleone" area for the construction of a new stadium. On February 4, 1932 the first stone was symbolically laid by the new President Pierre Luciani. Only a few months later, on October 16, the Stade de Furiani was inaugurated. On this occasion, SC Bastia played against a selection from Ajaccio. In 1933 Luciani retired after his work, the stadium, was completed to full satisfaction.
In the next season, the SC Bastia won the double again , consisting of the victory of the league and the victory of the cup, in the following year Armand Cesari, the long-time captain of the team, died; the stadium was renamed for the 1937/38 season in his honor. By 1963, eight more Corsican championship titles and ten Corsican cup victories followed. With the change of the first team of SC Bastia in the French league operation, the game operation in the Corsican competitions was continued by the second team.
Beginning of professional football and the "golden era" (1965–1986)
In 1965/66, SC Bastia completed its first season in French professional football and immediately took fourth place in Ligue 2 . In 1968 they won the second division championship and celebrated their first promotion to Ligue 1 . In 1972 the Corsicans reached the final of the French Cup , which they lost 2-1 to Olympique Marseille . Due to Marseille's simultaneous championship title, Bastia was nevertheless allowed to compete in the European Cup Winners' Cup 1972/73 and thus for the first time on the European stage.
In 1977, the team around successful coach Pierre Cahuzac and star players like Dragan Džajić , Claude Papi and Johnny Rep reached third place in Ligue 1 and thus the best placement in the club's history. The Corsicans caused a stir when they became the first French team ever to reach the final of this competition in the 1977/78 UEFA Cup thanks to victories over teams such as Sporting Lisbon , Newcastle United and Turin Calcio . There Bastia was defeated by the favored PSV Eindhoven after a return match with 0: 3.
In 1981, under coach Jean-Antoine Redin, SC Bastia won its first major title when they defeated record champions AS Saint-Étienne 2-1 in the French Cup final . This was followed by a decline, which led to the first relegation from Ligue 1 in 1986.
Promotion and relegation struggles (1986-2017)
The following decades were mainly characterized by battles for promotion and relegation, without the Corsicans being able to return to earlier heydays. After solid years in the second division, the second ascent in the club's history was achieved in 1994, after which they were able to stay in Ligue 1 for eleven years . Biggest successes during this time were reaching the final of the League Cup in 1995, which they lost 2-0 to Paris St. Germain , and winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1997 , which allowed a brief return to the European stage.
In 2005, Bastia was relegated from Ligue 1 for the second time, and in 2011 the temporary low was with the first relegation to the third division. However, the Corsicans managed to march back into Ligue 1 within two years.
In the 2016/17 season , SC Bastia came under criticism after the 20th matchday, as Bastia's supporters insulted star striker Mario Balotelli with monkey noises in the home game against OGC Nice . A few days later a fan turned himself in, his season ticket was withdrawn and the stadium was banned.
On matchday 33, SC Bastia came under fire again when spectators stormed the pitch during the warm-up and after the half-time whistle and attacked the Olympique Lyon players. The disciplinary committee decided against Bastia and rated the game with 0: 3 against the SC. In addition, SC Bastia had to play two games in front of empty stands and on a neutral field ( Stade Parsemain ).
In terms of sport, SC Bastia was relegated from the first division with a defeat against Olympique Marseille in the last game.
Insolvency and a new start (from 2017)
After relegation from Ligue 1, Bastia should play the new season in Ligue 2 . However, in June 2017, the DNGC refused SC Bastia the license for Ligue 2 due to its financial deficit and moved him to National 3 (fifth division). A complaint by the association before the administrative court was rejected. Bastia lost his professional status and with it his entire professional team.
In August 2017, the club was taken over by Pierre-Noël Luiggi and Claude Ferrandi. Ferrandi also assumed the office of President, Luiggi that of Vice-President. In addition to the new management, Stéphane Rossi was also introduced as the new trainer.
In season 2018/19 the Corsican group in the National succeeded as champion 3 promotion to the fourth division, National 2, Group A . The league team has been coached by Mathieu Chabert , successor to Stéphane Rossi , since October 2019 . The 2019/20 season in the 4th division was canceled in March 2020 due to the corona crisis. At this point in time, SC Bastia was ahead of the table with 5 points ahead of CS Sedan and was promoted to the National (D3) (3rd division) for the 2020/2021 season .
Stadion
SC Bastia plays in the Stade Armand Césari, better known by its old name Stade Furiani. The capacity is 16,480 spectators (now only seats). In 1992 it was the setting for the drama of Furiani , in which a newly constructed additional grandstand collapsed shortly before the start of a cup match, killing 18 and injuring 2,357. The stadium was expanded in the 2010/11 season by building the opposite stand.

Rui Almeida, a Portuguese with whom Bastia was relegated from Ligue 1 in 2016/17, and Henryk Kasperczak from Poland, are the two exceptions in the coaching history of SC Bastia. With the exception of the two just mentioned, all committed coaches had come from France since 1970.

Cahuzac is followed by Frederic Hantz, who brought the club back to Ligue 1 in modern times.

The Frenchman Pierre-Yves André was the most frequently on the field with over 300 games. Closely followed by long-time captain Yannick Cahuzac , who, however, left the club in the 2017/18 season. Both Corsicans remained loyal to the Sporting Club for over 10 years. In third place follows the first non-French, who has however also played over 200 games on the island.

League affiliation
After the club announced the imminent bankruptcy on August 4, 2017, the Sporting Club was downgraded to National 3, the fifth highest French league. This after the club has already been relegated from Ligue 1 , with 20th place, to Ligue 2 . After the subsequent negotiations with the management of the club, SC Bastia was denied the license for the second French league because of a deficit in the balance sheet. This was an administrative relegation to the National (D3) by the DNGC.
First class ( Division 1 , called Ligue 1 since 2002 ) played Bastia 1968–1986, 1994–2005 and 2012–2017; For the 2009/10 season, the club was relegated from Ligue 2 to the National . The risk of being transferred to the fourth division for economic reasons was ultimately averted; the club thus played the season in the third division and returned at the end of the season as champions in Ligue 2. The second division promotion was followed by the march through to Ligue 1.

For more than 10 years in total, Bastia played and therefore most often of all players. He was relegated to Ligue 2 on his return, but was then also instrumental in rebuilding the team. In the year after his retirement, the rise was a fact. André scored the most for Bastia with his 91 goals.
Frédéric Née (1998 - 2001/2003 - 2006, storm)
Michael Essien (2000 - 2003, midfielder)
The SC Bastia was the first stop in Michael Essien's career, while Essien was voted France's most valuable player in the 2002/03 season. He scored 11 goals in his 66 games at Bastia and after his departure Bastia was never ranked better.
Christian Karembeu (2005, defense)
Ending his career was Karembeu's motto when he came to Bastia. He only played 18 games for the Corsicans. But it was still a success for Bastia that they were able to sign such a "superstar".
Mickaël Landreau (2013 - 2014, goal)
The French international goalkeeper had come to Bastia for his last season and a half. He was awarded the Étoile d'Or for the best goalkeeper in his first season .
