SME (German: “We are”, also the first three letters of the word Smena) is a Slovak daily newspaper .

history

The newspaper was founded in January 1993 by a group of editors from Smena (until 1989 the newspaper of the Socialist Youth Association, in Slovak SZM), who disagree with a new editor-in-chief, who in their opinion was indirectly appointed by the Mečiar government, and with the corresponding new editorial policy was and had gathered around the former editor-in-chief Karol Ježík. The new newspaper managed to win over the readers of Smena relatively quickly, so that SME was merged with Smena in 1995. In 2004 there was another merger with the newspaper Práca .

The newspaper

SME had a circulation of 55,468 in May 2010. The newspaper appears six times a week in a Berlin-like format (315 × 423 mm) on 28–48 pages and is considered a critical independent newspaper. It serves all age groups, but is mostly seen by young readers as "their newspaper". Since its inception, the newspaper has been very critical of any government in which Vladimír Mečiar's party takes part, and represents views from the far-right of the political spectrum. It has its own publishing house, the Petit Press, and its own printing company. The current editor-in-chief is called Beáta Balogová; former editors-in-chief are Karol Ježík (1993–1998), Martin Milan Šimečka (1998–2006) and Matúš Kostolný (2006–2014)

Regional presence

SME's publishing company, Petit Press, is also active at the regional level; In western and central Slovakia , various regional weekly newspapers are listed together as MY (literally: "WIR"), while the daily Korzár is intended for eastern Slovakia . Other newspapers published are the Hungarian language Új Szó (New Word) and the English language The Slovak Spectator .

Online edition

The newspaper has had an online presence at the address SME.sk since 1993. A blog platform was created (initially only to a limited extent) in October 2004, with the aim of having citizen journalists cover areas where the newspaper had no reach. Six months later, the blogs were released to everyone. As of October 2008, the entire platform had around 11,000 members. In addition, the newspaper is involved in the digitization of the public domain Slovak books in cooperation with the Slovak National Library ; in July 2010 there were more than 1,200 books according to their own information.

The SME website was the third most visited site in Slovakia in May 2010 (1,592,060 RU ).
