The development is concentrated on the spacious plain north of the steep slope. This is limited in the east by Lac Saint-Augustin , a 2.3 km long and 300 m wide lake. Foothills of the Laurentine Mountains rise in the far north of the urban area .

history

City arms

In 1647 the brothers Jean Juchereau de Maur and Noël Juchereau Deschatelets were awarded the Seigneurie west of the Rivière du Cap Rouge . They came from La Ferté-Vidame , near the pilgrimage site of Saint-Maur. The parish of Saint-Augustin was founded in 1691 when the Seigneurie was owned by the former governor Augustin de Saffray de Mézy . The first part of the place name thus refers to him, but also to Saint Augustine of Hippo ; the addition Desmaures developed from the family name de Maur. The Chemin du Roy , completed in 1737, was the first to have a road connection with the cities of Québec and Montreal . One year after the abolition of the manor in 1855, the community was founded. The construction of the motorway and the establishment of an extensive industrial park led to a marked increase in population from the 1970s.

The provincial government ordered the merger of Saint-Augustin and other parishes with the city of Québec , which came into effect on January 1, 2002. Saint-Augustin was now part of the Laurentien arrondissement of the city of Québec. This approach met with great resistance from the population. In a referendum on January 20, 2004, 61.8% of the voters were in favor of the separation, although the required quorum of 35% yes-votes of all voters was only just exceeded. The community was re-established on January 1, 2006 and received city status at the same time, but had to cede some competencies to the community association of the agglomeration of Québec . Since then it has also been part of the Communauté métropolitaine de Québec association .
