history

On behalf of the American Fur Company, the fur trader Joseph Robidoux set up a trading post in 1826 near the current location of St. Joseph. In 1843 Robidoux, who had become independent from the company, commissioned Frederick W. Smith and Simeon Kemper to design a city for him. After completing the planning, Robidoux began selling the lots for $ 100 to $ 150. As a result, the city quickly grew to 800 inhabitants in 1846 and reached a population of 8932 in 1860.

In addition, the village quickly developed into an important traffic junction. Until the Civil War , it was the westernmost point in the United States that could be reached by rail , making it the last supply point before the Wild West , which stretched across the Missouri. This is also the reason why the eastern end point of the Pony Express was in Saint Joseph , which was the fastest postal connection in North America between April 3, 1860 and the end of October 1861.

On April 4, 1882, Jesse James , who had settled here under the name "Thomas Howard", was shot from behind here. The perpetrator who tried to collect the bounty was Robert Ford and a member of Jesse James' gang. In the Kearney cemetery, on the family property, Jesse James' headstone reads, "Murdered by a traitor and coward whose name is not worth appearing here."

Saint Joseph owes the slogan "Where the Pony Express started and Jesse James ended." To the Pony Express and Jesse James. (in German: "Where the Pony Express began and Jesse James ended." )
