Samuel Egbert Anderson (born January 6, 1906 in Greensboro , North Carolina , † September 12, 1982 in Colorado Springs , Colorado ) was an American general in the US Air Force , who last commanded the Air Materiel Command from 1959 to 1961 ) and then between 1961 and 1963 was the commander of the Air Force Logistics Command that emerged from it .

Life

Anderson completed his military training at the US Military Academy at West Point , which he finished on June 9, 1928 with the promotion to lieutenant ( second lieutenant ) of the coastal artillery. In May 1943 Anderson was transferred to the European theater of war and took over the post as administrative inspector at the 3rd Medium Bombardment Wing ( 3rd Medium Bombardment Wing ) before he was commander of this squadron on July 12, 1943. Two months later, as major general in September 1943, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross "for exceptional service in leading his squadron in two combat missions over enemy-occupied territory in Europe on July 16 and August 2, 1943". In October 1943, he was appointed commanding general of the 9th Bomber Command (Medium) of the Ninth Air Force , with ten of the eleven bomber groups under his command receiving a Presidential Unit Citation . Post-war period and promotion to general

Anderson was appointed to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS ) on the United Strategic Observatory in February 1946 and then in February 1948 as head of planning and operations in the office of the Deputy Chief of Air Force Staff at US Air Force Headquarters, where he was appointed worked until August 1950. During the Korean War, between August 1950 and May 1953, he held the post of Commanding General of the Eighth Air Force at Carswell Air Force Base.
