Samuel Thomas Baird (born May 5, 1861 in Oak Ridge , Morehouse Parish , Louisiana , † April 22, 1899 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1899 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Samuel Baird enjoyed a private education and then studied at Vincennes University in Indiana . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1882, he began to work in his new profession in Bastrop (Louisiana). Between 1884 and 1888 he served as a district attorney in the sixth judicial district of Louisiana. He was then a judge in the same district until 1892. Then he worked again as a lawyer.

Politically, Baird became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1896 he sat in the Louisiana Senate and took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago . In the congressional elections that year he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the fifth constituency of Louisiana, where he succeeded Charles J. Boatner on March 4, 1897 . In the subsequent elections in 1898, Baird was confirmed. On March 4, 1899, he entered his second term in Congress . But he could not finish this because he died on April 22nd, 1899. His mandate fell to Joseph E. Ransdell after a by-election .
