Charles William Boustany (* 21st February 1956 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . From 2005 to 2017 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives . In 2016 he ran for the United States Senate .

Career

Charles Boustany first attended Cathedral Carmel High School in Lafayette . He then studied until 1978 at the University of Southwestern Louisiana . This was followed by a medical degree at Louisiana State University in New Orleans until 1982 . After that he worked as a doctor.

In the 2004 election he was elected as a Republican candidate in the seventh congressional electoral district of Louisiana to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Democrat Chris John on January 3, 2005 . In the 2010 election he was confirmed unopposed; In 2012 , he started because of a redesign of the constituencies in the third district and had to face the inner-party challenge of Jeff Landry there . After none of the candidates had achieved an absolute majority in the election on November 6, 2012, Boustany prevailed in the runoff election on December 8 of that year with 61 to 39 percent of the vote against Landry. After another re-election in 2014, he decided not to run again in 2016. Instead, he ran unsuccessfully in the Republican primary for the nomination for the United States Senate . He resigned from Congress on January 3, 2017 .

He is married to Bridget Edwards, a niece of former Democratic Governor Edwin Edwards . The couple have two children and live privately in Lafayette.
