San Luigi dei Francesi ( French Saint-Louis-des-Français ; Latin Sancti Ludovici Francorum de Urbe ) is a church in Rome . The church, built between 1518 and 1589 near Piazza Navona , is the French national church and is dedicated to St. King Louis IX consecrated by France.

As the titular church they always hold the cardinals, who are also Archbishops of Paris .

Furnishing

The church is home to numerous art treasures, but the biggest attraction is the Contarelli Chapel with three paintings by Caravaggio . The pictures show the vocation of St. Matthew , the martyrdom of St. Matthew and the writing of the gospel with the angel. The paintings, created between 1599 and 1602, were Caravaggio's first major commission, which he received from his early patron Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte . They are characterized by the great realism and typical of Caravaggio chiaroscuro from.

The interior of the church was redesigned between 1749 and 1756 by Antoine Dérizet in the late Baroque style; Charles-Joseph Natoire painted the ceiling fresco Apotheosis of Saint Louis from 1754 to 1756.

The organ above the main portal was built by Joseph Merklin in 1879 ; it comprises 35 registers on 4 works.

In 1836 a marble memorial was posthumously erected in honor of the famous painter Claude Lorrain (approx. 1604 / 5–1682), who spent most of his life in Rome but was buried in the Santissima Trinità dei Monti : the grave stele shows a life-size muse with a laurel wreath that hugs the imaginary portrait of the painter.
