San Patrizio a Villa Ludovisi

San Patrizio a Villa Ludovisi is a Roman Catholic parish and titular church . The church, under the patronage of Saint Patrick , Apostle and Patron of Ireland , was one of two Irish national churches alongside Sant'Isidoro a Capo le Case until 2017 . Since the summer of 2017, it serves the community of US Catholics in Rome as the national church .

history

Originally the Irish church in Rome was San Matteo in Merulana with an attached Augustinian monastery near the Lateran. It was the starting point for the Irish in Rome and was demolished by the French in 1810. In 1819 the Irish were awarded Santa Maria in Posterula , which was an abandoned monastery church of the Cölestines . The church and monastery were right next to a river that regularly caused floods. The complex was demolished in 1888 and the monks had to find a new home. Some frescoes have been saved and transferred to the current church. In 1885 the Villa Ludovisi was demolished and the property was sold as building land. The brothers bought a corner property and laid the foundation stone in 1888. The main initiator was Father Patrick Glynn from Limerick , and Aristide Leonori was the architect of this Nordic Classical church. Unfortunately, the community's funds were insufficient for the large church with attached monastery and it was abandoned in 1898.

For a short time, English Benedictine women owned the unfinished monastery and wanted to build their own church. Between 1901 and 1903, the property returned to the Augustinians under unknown conditions. In the English press this has been described as a scandal. The brothers continued to build the church and sold the Church of the Nuns (last mentioned in 1903) for the construction of a hospital. The monastery church was completed and opened in 1911 after twenty-three years of construction. It became a center for Irish emigrants and pilgrims in Rome.

On February 25, 1965 she was by Pope Paul VI. raised to the title church.

In 2012 the Irish Augustinian monks gave up the church. At the same time, the American congregation cared for by Paulists lost its long-standing Santa Susanna Church and took over St. Patrick in 2017.
