Sander Groen (born June 16, 1968 in Amsterdam ) is a former Dutch tennis player .

Personal

Groen started playing tennis when he was eight. In addition to Dutch, he speaks English, German, French and Italian.

Career

The beginnings in professional tennis

Groen started his professional career in 1989 and specialized mainly in doubles. There he reached his first final at the Challenger tournament in Singapore in 1990 . A year later he won his first title in Cherbourg . In 1992 he also reached a final on the ATP World Tour in Umag , which he lost in the final with Lars Koslowski as a partner against David Prinosil and Richard Vogel .

Until the end as a professional player in 2002

In the following years Groen was able to establish himself permanently in the top 300 in the individual. In doubles he even made it into the top 100 in 1997 to his highest ranking 61. After winning further doubles titles in the Challengers in Munich and Singapore in 1993 and 1994 , he made his only one in 1997 with Goran Ivanišević as a partner in Dubai Winning titles on the ATP World Tour . After four more titles on the Challenger Tour, Groen announced in 2002 that he would like to retire from full-time professional tennis. In 1999 when he won the tournament in Segovia, Groen played alongside the young Roger Federer , who won his first ATP title with Groen. The final also took place on Federer's 18th birthday.

In his career, Groen won against the world number one of the doubles Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis , Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes as well as Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor .

From 2002

After his retirement, Groen only played sporadically in tournaments on the ITF Future Tour and the Challenger Tour. On the former he even won three doubles titles at the age of 45 and 46 respectively. In 2016 he even took part in the Delray Beach Open , a tournament on the ATP World Tour , in Delray Beach for the first time since 2002 . On the side of Adelchi Virgili he lost in the opening round with 8:10 in the match tie-break . Until 2016 he still took part in tournaments.
