Sanna Mirella Marin (born November 16, 1985 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish politician . She is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) and has been Prime Minister of the Republic of Finland since December 10, 2019 . She is the youngest female prime minister in the history of Finland and was also the youngest head of government in the world when she took office.

Career

In 2004 Marin graduated from Pirkkala yhteislukio , a high school. In 2017 a master's degree in administrative sciences at Tampere University followed . In 2012, at the age of 27, she was elected to Tamperes City Council and chaired it from 2013 to 2017. In 2017 she was re-elected to the city council. She also became a member of the regional council of Pirkanmaa .

In 2014 Marin was elected second deputy chairman of the Social Democratic Party. She has been a member of the Finnish Parliament since 2015 . After the 2019 election , she became Minister of Transport and Communications in the Rinne cabinet on June 6, 2019 .

Following the resignation of Prime Minister Antti Rinne on December 3, the Social Democratic Party of Finland nominated Marin as his successor on December 8, 2019. It was confirmed by Parliament on December 10, 2019 ; the Marin cabinet was then sworn in.

Personal

Marin was born in Helsinki and grew up in a rainbow family with her mother and her partner. She lived in Espoo and Pirkkala before moving to Tampere to study .

On August 1, 2020, she married Markus Räikkönen, a former football player in the Finnish second division . The couple had lived together for 16 years and had a daughter born in 2018.
