Santiago Giraldo (born November 27, 1987 in Pereira ) is a Colombian tennis player .

Career

Until 2005: Junior and first experiences as a professional

Santiago Giraldo started playing tennis at the age of two. His two older siblings Daniel and Carmina also played tennis, the latter made it to number 256 in the WTA world rankings .

Santiago's greatest success as a junior was reaching the semifinals of the US Open in 2005. In 2002, however, he was already playing in the adult division and from 2003 onwards was listed in the tennis world rankings. In 2005, at the age of 17, he won his first title at a future tournament and thus rose to the top 400 in the world rankings.

2006: Davis Cup debut and first Challenger title

In February 2006 Giraldo played for the Davis Cup team for the first time and contributed to the 4-1 win over Uruguay by defeating Pablo Cuevas . Since then he has won 16 Davis Cup matches ten times. After two further futures titles in May and June, Giraldo triumphed for the first time in a Challenger tournament in July 2006 in Bogotá . Towards the end of the year, another Challenger final followed in Medellín and the advance into the top 200 in the world rankings.

2007–2009: Grand Slam debut and further successes on the Challenger Tour

At the beginning of 2007 Giraldo was able to qualify for an ATP tournament for the first time in Chennai , but lost to Igor Andreyev in round one . His first attempt to qualify in a Grand Slam tournament at the 2007 Australian Open ended in the first qualifying round. After his second Challenger victory in Bogotá and a final in San Luis Potosí , he qualified at the French Open . In the first round, however, he was defeated by the later semi-finalist Novak Đoković in three tight sets. In the further course of the year a Challenger victory in Quito and a final participation in Bogotá followed.

In March 2008, Girlando celebrated his first victory at the Indian Wells Masters at the ATP level: After successfully qualifying, he defeated the Austrian Werner Eschauer in the first round . As a “reward” there was a second round match against world number two Rafael Nadal , who lost Giraldo 3: 6, 3: 6. In Roland Garros he was able to qualify as in the previous year, but against Florent Serra he was eliminated in the first round this time. At the ATP tournament in Vienna Giraldo won his second ATP match against Stefan Koubek . In November 2008 he was able to celebrate his first double title at the Challenger tournament in Guayaquil on the side of Sebastián Decoud . In the individual he remained without a title this year, but was still able to stay in the top 200.

The year 2009 began with victories at the Challenger tournaments in Salinas and San Luis Potosí. In May he qualified again for the main draw of the French Open , followed by a first round defeat against Denis Istomin . During the year he played many qualifications in ATP tournaments, but he never got past the first major round. From September 2009 he concentrated again on Challenger tournaments and moved up to 107th place in the world rankings, among other things by a victory in Sacramento and a final in Guayaquil.

2010: Entry into the Top 100 and establishment on the ATP Tour

As a result, he was directly qualified for the Chennai ATP tournament in early 2010 , where he reached the quarter-finals. He was also able to take part in the Australian Open without qualifying, where he met Tommy Robredo , who was in 16th position, in the first round . In straight three sets he celebrated his first victory in a Grand Slam match, despite the second round defeat against Łukasz Kubot , he was then included in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time. After a Challenger victory in his hometown of Pereira , he moved into the round of 16 at the Masters tournament in Rome after successfully qualifying and winning over former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero and Michaël Llodra , in which he was defeated by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga . As a result, he rose to number 61 in the world rankings and was now able to play in ATP tournaments without qualifying. At the French Open he was defeated by Kei Nishikori in five sets and at Wimbledon he was only beaten against Thiemo de Bakker after more than four hours. The extraordinary result of 14:16 in the fifth set would certainly have caused a stir if the record match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut had not taken place at the same time . In the following US hard court season Giraldo was eliminated in five tournaments, including his US Open debut, each in the first round. In the Davis Cup game against the USA Giraldo won his single against Sam Querrey smoothly, but he lost his second single against Mardy Fish in five tight sets and could not prevent the 1: 3 defeat. If Colombia had won, it would have entered the world group for the first time. In October and November 2010 Giraldo reached the second round of the indoor hard court tournaments in Kuala Lumpur , Vienna , Basel and Paris and ended his best season so far in 66th place in the world rankings.

2011: First ATP final

The year 2011 began for Giraldo with a quarter-finals in Brisbane . A week later he reached in Auckland after victories over the seeded Albert Montañés and Thomaz Bellucci for the first time in his career an ATP semi-final, in which he lost to the eventual winner David Ferrer . At the Australian Open Giraldo was able to reach the second round by beating Rui Machado as in the previous year, in which he was eliminated against Marin Čilić , who was in 15th position . At the beginning of February 2011 Giraldo reached the final of an ATP tournament for the first time in Santiago de Chile after victories over the top 50 players Juan Ignacio Chela and Potito Starace, among others . There he led against Tommy Robredo in the third set 5: 3, but lost set and match in the tie-break at the end. Nevertheless, he achieved a position in the top 50 of the world rankings for the first time. Three weeks later, Giraldo defeated the top 30 player Albert Montañés again in Acapulco , but was then eliminated in the quarterfinals in three sets against the eventual finalist Nicolás Almagro . After a round of 16 defeat in Barcelona against world number one Rafael Nadal , Giraldo could not reach the second round in the fifth attempt at the French Open . He lost in three straight sets against Pablo Andújar in the first round . After a quarter-final defeat in 's-Hertogenbosch against eventual tournament winner Dmitri Tursunow , Richard Gasquet was followed by another first round in Wimbledon . In July he defeated the world number twelfth Jürgen Melzer in Stuttgart before he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Łukasz Kubot .
