Sausalito is a city in Marin County in the US state of California , directly on the San Francisco Bay . The name of the city is of Spanish origin and was initially "Saucelito", which means "small pasture" in German.

history

Originally, the Miwok lived in what is now Sausalito. Early explorers from Europe (the first was the Spaniard Don José de Cañizares in 1775 ) describe them as friendly and helpful. Within a few generations, however, the immigrants took their place.

Due to the geographical proximity to the Golden Gate , the area in and around Sausalito should also prove to be militarily important, first in the Mexican-American War , later in World War II . At the eastern end of the Golden Gate there was a Spanish fort with 33 men as early as 1783 , which under the official name Presidio has become the most important strategic point on the US west coast. Sausalito was also a popular spot with rum smugglers during the Prohibition period .

tourism

Sausalito local brochure

Due to its location at the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge , Sausalito has a relatively large number of visitors. From the highway exit, a small spur road leads up a hill with a lookout point that allows a view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay of San Francisco .

Many tourists also come to the city by water. A ferry operates nine times a day between Sausalitos Harbor and the Ferry Building in San Francisco. Alongside a houseboat colony , a boardwalk runs past shops and restaurants with views of Alcatraz and the San Francisco skyline.

Literary processing

The novel The Sea Wolf by Jack London begins with the first-person narrator Humphrey van Weyden on his way back from Sausalito to San Francisco on Monday morning after a weekend in Mill Valley , when the ferry rammed and sunk by a steamer in the thick fog becomes. Van Weyden is later fished up by the outgoing seal protector of the Wolf Larsen, the "sea wolf".
