Marin County is a county in the US state of California . It is part of the so-called San Francisco Bay Area , near the city of San Francisco . The county seat is San Rafael .

The infamous San Quentin State Prison is in Marin County, as is the Skywalker Ranch , the headquarters of the film and media company Lucasfilm Ltd. Several high-tech companies are also based here. Marin County is the birthplace of the mountain bike .

Marin County is one of the wealthiest areas in the United States, with the fifth-highest per capita income in the country.

history

Marin County was one of the counties introduced when the state was founded in 1850.

The origin of the name is not clear. One possibility is that the namesake was Chief Marin, the leader of the Licatiut Indian tribe . This tribe inhabited the area and fought against the Spanish conquerors. The other version says that the bay between San Pedro and San Quentin was called Bahía de Nuestra Señora del Rosario la Marinera in 1775 . It is quite possible that Marin is an abbreviation for this somewhat unwieldy name.

There are four National Historic Landmarks in Marin County . A total of 41 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Marin County had a population of 247,289 people as of the 2000 census . There were 100,650 households and 60,691 families. The population density was 184 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.03% White, 2.89% African American, 0.43% Native American, 4.53% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, and 4.50% other races Groups; 3.47% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 11.06% of the population.

Of the 100,650 households, 27.50% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 48.40% were married couples living together, 8.50% were single mothers. 39.70% were not families. 29.80% are single households and 9.60% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.90.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 20.30% of residents under 18 years of age, 5.50% between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.00% between 25 and 44 years of age, 29.70% between 45 and 64 years of age 13.50% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 98.20 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 96.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 71,306 , and the median income for a family is $ 88,934. Males had a median income of $ 61,282 versus $ 45,448 for females. The per capita income was $ 44,962. 6.60% percent of the population and 3.70% of families are below the poverty line. 6.90% of these were under 18 years of age and 4.50% were 65 years of age or older.
