Monterey County is a county in the state of California in the United States . The county seat is Salinas .

history

The county was formed on February 18, 1850. It was named after the city of the same name, Monterey, on Monterey Bay .

There are 6 National Historic Landmarks in Monterey County . A total of 59 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Pebble Beach

In the far west of the county is Pebble Beach near Monterey. The Pebble Beach Golf Links golf course has existed there since 1919, and the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance automotive beauty contest has been held here every year since 1950 . The 17-Mile Drive leads to the small town of Carmel-by-the-Sea , the Point Lobos State Reserve and other attractions.

The Sespe Wilderness

Monterey County's population was 401,762 as of the 2000 census . There were 121,236 households and 87,896 families. The population density was 47 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 55.92% White, 3.75% African American, 1.05% Native American, 6.03% Asian, 0.45% Pacific Islander, and 27.82% other races Groups; 4.98% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 46.79% of the population.

Of the 121,236 households, 39.10% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.00% were married couples living together, 11.60% were single mothers. 27.50% were not families. 21.20% were single households and 8.20% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.14 and the average family size was 3.65 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.40% of residents under 18 years of age, 10.90% between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.40% between 25 and 44 years of age, 19.30% between 45 and 64 years of age 10.00% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 107.30 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 107.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 48,305 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,169. Males had a median income of $ 38,444 versus $ 30,036 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,165. 13.50% of the population and 9.70% of families are below the poverty line. 17.40% of these were under 18 years of age and 6.80% were 65 years of age or older.
