Contra Costa County is a county in California . It is located in the San Francisco Bay area . The county seat is Martinez .

history

Contra Costa County was one of the founding counties of California and was created in 1850. The original name was " Mount Diablo County". Parts of the area went to Alameda County in 1853 .

The name Contra Costa is Spanish and means "opposite the coast". Contra Costa County is on the San Francisco opposite, eastern side of San Francisco Bay.

In the Port Chicago disaster on the southern coast of Suisun Bay on July 17, 1944, the two transport ships "EA Bryan" and "Quinault Victory" exploded while taking over ammunition. 320 people died in the accident, including 202 African American recruits . On August 9, 1944, three weeks after the catastrophe, the sailors refused to continue the loading without prior professional training. In one of the largest military tribunals in US history, 50 sailors were convicted of mutiny, which later sparked a judicial scandal.

On May 7, 1964, Pacific Air Lines Flight 773 crashed near San Ramon after a passenger killed the cockpit crew and the driverless machine crashed into a mountainside. All 44 people on board were killed in the impact.

There are two National Historic Landmarks in Contra Costa County , the John Muir National Historic Site and the Tao House . 43 other structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places .

According to the 2000 census , the Contra Costa County had 948,816 people. There were 344,129 households and 242,266 families. The population density was 509 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.50% White, 9.36% African American, 0.61% Native American, 10.96% Asian, 0.37% Pacific Islander, and 8.06% other races Groups; 5.13% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 17.68% of the population.

Of the 344,129 households, 35.40% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.50% were married couples living together, 11.50% were single mothers. 29.60% were not families. 22.90% are single households and 8.00% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.23.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.50% residents under 18 years of age, 7.70% between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.60% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.90% between 45 and 64 years of age 11.30% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 95.40 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 63,675 , and the median income for a family is $ 73,039. Males had a median income of $ 52,670 versus $ 38,630 for females. The per capita income was $ 30,615. 7.60% percent of the population and 5.40% of families are below the poverty line. 9.80% of them were under 18 years of age and 6.00% were 65 years of age or older.
