The Scala , and thus not "the" Scala, is the oldest and most traditional event location for culture in Ludwigsburg . The Clusssche Saalbau (named after the Cluss brewery ) has been used as a cultural hall since the beginning of the 20th century: theater, cinema, cabaret and music have always found space here. The Scala in its present form is an almost unchanged cinema from the 1950s with a large stage in front of the screen and 400 seats, including a balcony.

When the news appeared in the Ludwigsburger Zeitung (LZ) on August 16, 1902, that the widow Cluss had acquired the “Zum Englischer Hof” building from a “photographer” P. Koch for 69,000 Reichsmarks, nobody could have guessed that it would turn into a centenary Cultural history would arise, the end of which is not yet in sight. The Cluss'sche Saal, as it was called from then on, was a spacious hall with side galleries and a large stage from which table music delighted the guests .

It was officially handed over to the event business on December 27, 1902 with a large ceremony. On December 29, 1902, the LZ read: The trumpet corps of the field artillery regiments No. 65 and 29, alternately directed by Messrs. Thomas and Rübmann, had united to form a clay body that is very respectable and whose achievements are still due to the excellent acoustics of the room were raised.

In the years that followed, music and dance events took place in the hall, where, as can be seen on an old postcard from 1910, the atmosphere of a brewery prevailed. Comedy games in particular delighted the lively audience during this time.

In 1932, the hall building also became a movie theater. In the LZ of October 1, 1932, it says: The opening program [...] first confirms the commendable intentions of the management . Both the main film “Quick” and the supporting program consisting of cultural films and sound film grotesque were brand new and met with lively applause. By the way, the main actors in the film were Hans Albers and Lilian Harvey .

Before the Nazis came to power, as can be read in the December 1991 issue of SCALA, there were also major events by anti-Hitlerites. That’s what KPD chairman Ernst Thälmann said there . The event against Section 218 of the Criminal Code, at which the doctor and playwright Friedrich Wolf spoke , also caused a stir .

Open-air theater in the Cluss garden

Today the Scala is divided into the SCALA cinema, SCALA Live and the SCALA theater. The cinema pauses for the live events. During the summer break from Scala Live, the theater summer attracts visitors in the Cluss garden, the former brewery site directly behind the Cluss hall building.

The concept of the Scala is simple: the visitor should have a wide range of cultural offerings with above-average quality available through clearly structured series of events and a continuous program. True to the motto “culture for everyone”. Kinokult does not only offer the usual blockbusters, but also high-quality cinema, original versions or school cinema programs.
