The Dresden Student Computing Center (SRZ) is a facility for extra-curricular education and the promotion of talented students in the fields of computer science and electronics . The SRZ is an operating unit of the computer science faculty of the Technical University of Dresden and is located in the Bürgerwiese grammar school in Dresden near the Great Garden . The facility, established in 1984, uses a course system every year to impart knowledge in software development / programming and the use of modern electronic components . In addition, insights into current developments in the IT industry are given.

history

The creation of the SRZ

Before the student computer center was founded, the Technical Cabinet for Microelectronics ( TKME ) was set up in 1982 on the basis of a resolution by the SED city management. This was one of the preparatory measures for the VII Pioneer Meeting. The location for the new cabinet was in a side wing of the 10th Tamara Bunke POS on Johann-Wolfgang-von-Goethe-Strasse 1, today Gret-Palucca -Strasse . On May 1, 1982, the TKME was opened by the first secretary of the SED city administration. The technical cabinet for microelectronics was the forerunner of the student data center.

On February 4, 1983, the student computer center for young people - Robotron was founded by the Dresden SED district management . As an out-of-school facility of the public education department, the student computer center should grant selected students from Dresden funding in the fields of microelectronics and computer science. Many different institutions were involved in the structure of this educational institution:

In the summer of 1983, two rooms were set up next to the technical cabinet for microelectronics for the student computer center. Technology was provided by the Robotron Kombinatsbetriebe VEB Robotron-Bürotechnik Dresden, VEB Robotron-Meßelektronik and VEB Robotron-Elektronik. These companies then founded a consortium on January 17, 1984 under the direction of VEB Robotron-Bürotechnik Dresden , which set the priorities for the work at the SRZ.

The first technical equipment consisted of:

Thanks to the Robotron combine, this could be maintained and constantly renewed. At the end of 1984, the first Z 9001 small computers came into the student data center. Before the student data center was officially opened, a trial run was carried out with around 50 students in the 1983/84 school year. The first working groups deal with getting to know electronic components and basic circuits.

On October 15, 1984, after a one-year probationary period, the student data center was opened. This event was attended by, among others, Hans Modrow , members of the Dresden District Council and Dr. Dieter Walter, then Deputy General Director of the Robotron Combine , participated. In the course of the ceremony, the guests examined the work rooms and found out about the level of knowledge of the students.

In October 1987 there was a meeting of the Social Council (a special advisory body alongside the consortium ). Problems were discussed here, how to get students excited about the SRZ and how to achieve better awareness. As a solution, leaflets and press releases about the facility were developed. During this time, the SRZ had

  • five employees,
  • 18 working groups,
  • three theory courses,
  • and 233 students.

On November 15, 1988, the SRZ celebrated its fifth birthday in the ballroom of Dresden's town hall .

90s

In September 1989, the student data center began to separate from the Pionierpalast Dresden. In the course of this, the Social Council decided on October 24, 1989 that the SRZ should be assigned to the Council of the City of Dresden. Nevertheless, the complete separation from the Pioneer Palace could only take place in January 1990, as the employees were previously subject to this facility and its house rules.

In the school year 1993/94, the student computer center was able to organize the first Dresden IT competition thanks to great recognition in Dresden. In addition to allowing SRZ students to compare with other students, this was intended to arouse curiosity about IT. Due to the great interest, the third competition was held across Saxony and has been held annually as the Saxon IT competition since then. Every year around 7,000 schoolchildren from all over Saxony take part.

Until the summer of 1994, the SRZ in the 10th middle school had the northern part of the 2nd floor and parts of the side wing of the facility. Due to problems with the ownership structure, the SRZ had to give up the rooms in the side wing. The SRZ was housed in the main building, in three computer cabinets, an electronics room and two offices.

The impending closure

At the end of the 1990s, the student data center was about to close because the budget for 1999 was canceled. The school administration office had already drawn up a template that provided for the SRZ to be continued in the adult education center. However, through the initiative of the sponsoring association of the student computer center, the Technical University of Dresden was won over as a sponsor in May 2000. With the help of this sponsorship, a better connection to scientific processes could be created, since one worked together with the faculties of the TU Dresden.

In the course of the restructuring, Infineon Technology Dresden decided to renew the technology of the student data center. With a total value of 150,000 DM, two computer cabinets were completely refurbished, multimedia technology was purchased and the electronics laboratory was modernized. On February 1, 2001, the reopening took place in the SRZ. With 140 student registrations, operations continued in the 2001/02 school year.

The SRZ to this day

After the school's data center was closed, the facility was able to concentrate on its educational mission and on December 15, 2004, celebrated its 20th anniversary. To this end, an anniversary event was held in the Rectorate of the TU Dresden . Companies such as IBM , AMD and Infineon Technologies showed their interest in the SRZ with donations in kind and money .

In the following years, the range of courses offered by the student data center was expanded or deepened with offers such as half-year courses, cross-school basic courses and preparatory courses.

At the end of the 2006/07 school year, the 10th sports school moved out of the building on Gret-Palucca-Strasse. In the following years the residents of the school house changed. First, the private all-day school of the IBB Dresden set up on the ground floor. The next year, the newly founded Bürgerwiese grammar school moved in . Since the school year 2009/10, the student data center was then alone with the grammar school in the house and celebrated its 25th anniversary on December 8th, 2009 in the Fritz-Löffler-Saal of the cultural town hall in Dresden. Since the opening, over 2500 students had received further training at this institution.

At the end of the 2013/14 school year, the student data center was able to leave the old school building on Gret-Palucca-Straße and moved with the Bürgerwiese grammar school into the newly built house on Parkstraße in Dresden.

Educational work

target

The student computer center specializes in promoting technology-loving and talented students in the fields of computer science and electronics . The extra-curricular education in these disciplines is intended to deepen and expand knowledge. In addition, working methods for dealing with these topics should be learned and consolidated. Thus, the students bases for studies and professional taught.

Content and course system

In order to obtain in-depth training in computer science and electronics , a course system has been developed that includes the topics of software development / programming in computer science training and the function and application of modern electronic components in electronics training. Furthermore, we react to current developments in the industry. The topics usually go beyond the content of the curriculum . The course system consists of several types of courses that the student can take:

  • Annual courses (computer science 1–4, electronics 1–3)
  • Special and special courses
  • Preparatory courses

When choosing a course over several years, the student can either deepen his knowledge in one area or get an overview of various topics. Successful completion of a course is confirmed with a certificate.

Annual rate

The annual courses in computer science and electronics form the core of the training at the SRZ. Here, basic knowledge is imparted in the courses Computer Science 1 and Electronics 1. Afterwards there is the possibility to attend advanced courses. The courses consist of a theoretical part with one hour per week and a study group with two hours per week.

If you have sufficient qualifications, it is also possible to take an advanced course. Aptitude is checked in a placement test when you register. A student may be placed in an advanced course.

Annual course offer 2014/15 :

course Computer science electronics
1 Programming basics Analog technology
2 Web programming Digital technology
3 Algorithms and data structures Microcontroller

Preparation course

The course type of the preparatory course, which was offered for the first time in the 2007/08 school year, is intended to give younger computer science-loving students an insight into computer science, electronics, robot control and programming. These are offered with two hours per week for half a year.

Project work

Another component of every course at the student computer center (except in the preparatory course) is a project work.

Annual work at the student data center

The student works on this either alone or in a group on a topic of their own choosing. In addition to the documentation and the maintenance of a specification , the projects are defended by the students in a lecture.

In addition, a special prize for the best annual work at the SRZ was awarded for the first time in the 2007/08 school year. This award now takes place every year on the open day. Representatives from the business world are invited and award the best annual work with the SRZ Prize.

Company projects

Since the 2009/10 school year, SRZ students have been able to create a project with IT companies based in Dresden. In addition, the so-called company day takes place every year in the second week after the October vacation at the facility. Companies present their ideas and students then apply for this project in a personal interview. Similar to the annual work, these include a specification, documentation and defense. However, they offer the students the incentive to create something special of lasting value.

Cross-school basic course in computer science

Since the 2005/06 school year, students in grades 11 and 12 have had the opportunity to have their attendance at the SRZ counted in the school as a basic course or optional basic course in computer science. The advanced computer science courses 3 and 4 are intended for recognition. However, this means that the student must either have successfully completed the Computer Science 2 course in order to participate or can demonstrate similar skills through an entrance test.

Participation in the junior doctor's program

In the school year 2008/09 the SRZ Dresden took part in the junior doctor's program for the first time. From this point onwards, the student computer center held three to twelve workshops every year (except 2010/11 and 2011/12) as part of the program, which dealt with various areas of computer science and electronics, for example on the subject of cryptography .

The Dresden Junior Doctor is a program in which students visit various scientific institutions and solve tasks. You can achieve the title of junior doctor .
