style

Guest musicians Ally Storch and Thomas Lindner at the Rockharz 2018

In addition to the classic instruments of rock music (bass, drums, acoustic and electric guitar), the band uses various instruments of medieval music such as shawm , hurdy-gurdy , flute , pipe , bagpipe , cister and lute . Typical folk instruments such as the violin and accordion are also an integral part of their music. The market bagpipe typical of medieval rock , on the other hand, is not used. Schandmaul see themselves mainly influenced by folk and rock , the Middle Ages play a rather minor role according to their own admission.

The texts are written in German and sometimes have a medieval coloring in syntax and choice of words. They often tell little stories that are mostly embedded in a medieval world. Kings, fools, minstrels ( The minstrel ), certain artifacts ( The Talisman ) or taverns ( drinking song ) appear in the texts. In these cases, the narratives (e.g. due to the narrative style ) look like fairy tales or legends .

In the course of the band's history, the style of music and the lyrics have changed. Musically medieval and folk instruments predominate on the first albums and the lyrics are almost without exception medieval in color. On the newer albums you can find more "harder" sounds, which is expressed, for example, in the use of a more dominant electric guitar. In addition, it can be seen in the texts that the Middle Ages motif is no longer so often the explicit focus and the medieval elements are sometimes dispensed with in terms of language. The latter in particular may also be related to the fact that all band members have contributed lyrics on newer albums.

For the first time, text passages in other languages are included on the 2014 album “Infinite”; specifically: The eponymous line “In Nomine” ( Latin ) and the repetition of the chorus in the song “Der Teufel ...” in Russian (contributed by the band Russkaja) and English (Fiddler's Green) as well as in “Der Teufel 2.4 Internationale version 2015 "titled music video in addition in Spanish (Random), Finnish (Dark Sarah), Polish (decision), French (Les Forbans D'Armorique), Italian (Merendine), Czech (Interitus) and Schwiizerdütsch (Proelium Mortem).
