The Echo Pop , written ECHO POP, was a German music award for personalities and productions from the field of popular pop music . The Echo Pop was the oldest of three echo prizes and was awarded annually by the German Phono Academy between 1992 and 2018. In addition to the Echo Pop , there was also the Echo Klassik and Echo Jazz .

description

The ranking of the winners in most categories was based on the added weekly results of the Media Control sales charts from February of one year to January of the following year. As a result, the absolute sales figures - distributed over the entire year - were not taken into account. This could easily bias the results. Good sales figures for artists who achieved good sales results over longer periods of time (without top positions in the charts for the week) were disadvantaged. In some categories (life's work and special prizes) the winners were selected by a jury. Prize winners for categories such as live act and music video were determined via online voting.

The organizers of the Echo officially stated that there is a jury for each Echo category, which consists of members of the Bundesverband Musikindustrie e. V. and music-loving partners from radio, press, TV and former award winners. At a press conference on March 21, 2012, co-founder and executive producer of the Echo Gerd Gebhardt stated that in those categories 50 percent of the jury and 50 percent of the sales figures decide on the award of the prize. However, the existence of juries in these categories is also questioned.

In order to avoid criticism such as at the Echo Awards 2013 because of the nomination of alleged music with a right-wing extremist background by Frei.Wild , an advisory board was set up for the Echo Awards 2014, which is supposed to examine the music of artists with suspicious backgrounds based on statements. The first album that was under observation was Frei.Wild's album Still , which it passed without any problems.

In 2017, the organizers reacted to criticism of the commercial orientation, but also of the escalating award ceremony. The 31 prize categories have been reduced to 22 and juries are selected more specifically and have more weight in the decision-making process.

On April 25, 2018, it was announced that the echo award ceremony will be discontinued and will not be continued.

Criticism and classification

The Echo describes itself as the “most important German music award”. Critics, on the other hand, see the price as an outdated self-presentation of the German music industry and the musicians it markets. Florian Schillat, for example, spoke of an “outdated music or sales price” before the 2017 Echo Awards in the specialist media magazine Meedia and asked whether the award should still be taken seriously after the widespread criticism of the award practice.

For the 2006 Echo Awards was originally an appearance by Oomph! and the title God is slated for a pop star . The band was unloaded at short notice. The cancellation was made by RTL with the following words: "In the context of the current, international religious discussions ( Mohammed caricatures ) and in the light of a general responsibility, we see a performance of the song God is a pop star very skeptical, even as irresponsible".

To the Echo 2013 the bands said MIA. , Die Ärzte und Kraftklub withdrew their participation in protest against the nomination of the South Tyrolean rock band Frei.Wild , who are criticized because of potential politically right-wing tendencies in their songs. The Berlin band Die Ärzte criticizes the fact that the awarding of the echoes is based exclusively on the sales figures and therefore also includes bands like Frei.Wild. Three years later, in 2016 Frei.Wild received an echo as “Best Rock / Alternative Group (national)”.

In 2016, the prize was criticized as the "Helene Fischer Festival" because the Schlager singer was awarded four prizes, but was only nominated three times. The organizer had not announced any nominations for the “Best Live Act” category and received the prize off the cuff.

In 2018 , the International Auschwitz Committee condemned the planned participation of the rap duo Kollegah and Farid Bang : It was " a slap in the face for all Holocaust survivors and a process that was shameful for Germany". For this purpose, the lines of text from the piece 0815 “My body is more defined than by Auschwitz inmates” and “Do another Holocaust, come on with the Molotov” were cited. In response to the excellent album and the live performance of the two rappers, numerous musicians returned their echoes, including Marius Müller-Westernhagen , who immediately returned all his echoes.
