Location and view

The Schilthorn stands between the upper Lauterbrunnen valley and the upper Kiental valley . However, its summit is pushed forward towards the Lauterbrunnen valley, so that it drains there on all sides. Since the construction of the cable car, the summit has been built over with the mountain station and a revolving restaurant and is therefore hardly of any alpinistic interest. The panorama is impressive: In the south and beyond the Lauterbrunnen valley, the entire main chain of the Bernese Alps dominates; in the north and west the view is clear over the countless lower peaks to the Jura , the Vosges and the Black Forest .

According to the SOIUSA classification , the mountain is located in the Bernese Pre-Alps , which extend to parts of the Freiburg , Bern and Emmental Alps , and is therefore their highest peak.

Cable car

Since 1967, several successive cable cars have led from Stechelberg in four sections to the Schilthorn:

On the longest section Mürren - Birg, the cable car overcomes a difference in altitude of 1039 meters. The journey from the valley station in Stechelberg to the summit takes 32 minutes.

The station in Gimmelwald is a specialty. This station is located exactly in the middle between Stechelberg and Mürren. Since the village of Gimmelwald had to be developed and the aim was to keep the costs for it as low as possible, the rope is only diverted there. However, the guests change gondolas at the Gimmelwald station.

On December 29, 2004, the Mürren-Birg section, which had only been renewed in 2003, suffered a partial rupture of one of the suspension cables in use since 1965. All 53 passengers were rescued by helicopter, and operations were interrupted for almost two months to allow the ropes to be replaced. The cause could later be identified as the inadequate implementation of a routine suspension cable shift in 1979, during which the cable was damaged unnoticed. All similarly constructed aerial ropeways in Switzerland were then additionally tested.

History of the Schilthornbahn

In 1958, a “Fonds Pro Mürren” was set up to “promote mountain railway projects, sports facilities, and improve the appearance of the village through improvements to the spa and pathways”. The Stechelberg – Gimmelwald – Mürren – Birg – Schilthorn project prevailed against the Mürren – AllmendhubelEngetal project . The concession for the cable car to the Schilthorn was given to Federal Councilor Giuseppe Lepori on October 3, 1959 . The concession was granted two years later and construction work could begin in 1963.

In 1965 the first three sections were completed. The last section was completed in 1967, but the money was only enough to build the shell of the mountain station. At this point in history, the production of the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service occurs. In the novel by Ian Fleming, James Bond travels to the three thousand meter high mountain “ Piz Gloria ”. This should only be accessible by cable car. On behalf of the film producers, the German Hubert Fröhlich traveled through Europe to look for a suitable location . Finally, on March 2, 1968, he reached Grindelwald to see the Jungfrau region . In the Hotel Adler, Fröhlich saw a postcard from the Schilthorn summit station and saw exactly what he was looking for. The next day he traveled to Mürren and after talking to the Schilthornbahn he was able to present a filming location to the production company Eon Productions . After the contract negotiations between the two parties, filming around the Schilthorn lasted from October 21, 1968 to May 17, 1969. The agreements were based on a simple contract: the railway company provided the location and the film producers paid for the permanent expansion of the summit building as well as everyone Transport, operating and personnel costs for the Schilthornbahn for filming.

The film producers were able to design the missing interior of the revolving restaurant according to their needs. A large part of it took place in permanent construction for the later tourism business. The cabins of the cable car were - colored orange and with - under protest from conservation circles Blofeld - arms provided. The orange paintwork of the gondolas was actually only intended for the duration of the film, but it remained until the cabins were replaced in 1995. The Bond producers also had a helicopter landing pad built, which now serves as a viewing platform.

Since 2013, there has been an interactive exhibition on the subject of James Bond and the film On Her Majesty's Secret Service in the Schilthorn mountain station .

Approaches

The Schilthorn can be climbed from all sides on alpine paths, especially from Mürren over the east ridge and from Kiental BE over the west ridge.

Ski runs

There are 25 ski slopes in the Mürren-Schilthorn ski area (as of 2020). Of these, 9 are blue (easy), 8 red (moderate), 7 black (difficult) and one slope that is always unprepared (Gimmelwald downhill route).

The Schilthorn is well suited for good skiers and freeriders. Only one black slope leads from the Schilthorn with a 75% incline into the Engetal. The slope is one of the steepest in the entire Jungfrau Region. The valley run to Mürren (Kanonenrohr) is also very demanding. There is a very large, unsecured freeride area around Piz Gloria. The "Nordhang" and "Totenkopf" slopes and the descent through the picturesque "Saus Tal" to Isenfluh are very popular. The game rest areas and the avalanche bulletin must be observed.

Regular events

Inferno downhill skiing

In 1928, English ski pioneers launched the first Inferno race. Currently, 1,850 people ski against the clock every year. The route leads from just below the Schilthorn over 14.9 kilometers and 1990 meters in altitude to the valley to Lauterbrunnen. If the snow conditions do not allow driving to Lauterbrunnen, the destination is already in Mürren.

Inferno triathlon

The Inferno Triathlon takes place every year in August . The athletes start with the swimming course in Thun . After swimming 3.1 kilometers in Lake Thun , 97 kilometers on a racing bike to Grindelwald (2145 meters ascent) and 30 kilometers on a mountain bike over the Kleine Scheidegg to Stechelberg (1,180 meters ascent), the mountain run takes the athletes over a distance of 25 kilometers and 2175 vertical meters to the finish on the Schilthorn.
