The Rothensee lock is part of the Magdeburg waterway intersection and is located in the Rothensee connecting canal . This connects the Mittelland Canal with the Magdeburg ports and the Elbe . The lock replaces the Rothensee ship lift , which no longer meets the requirements of today's inland shipping.

Since the old Rothensee ship lift had too little transport capacity and too small a trough length, the Rothensee lock was built next door. It is designed as an economy lock, so that the water loss caused by the locks is kept to a minimum. The lock chamber is approximately 12.50 meters wide and 190 meters long. It has a head of 10.45 to 18.46 meters, depending on the water level of the Elbe. The Obertor is a 5.10 meter high train segment gate . The lower head closes an almost 22 meter high stem gate due to the strongly changing Elbe water levels .

The lock was built between April 1997 and May 2001. It was opened to traffic on May 21, 2001. A viewing platform for visitors with access via a steel staircase was built above the steering position.

Special

From the point of view of reducing the water consumption of the lock and thus the pumping back of the process water during the lock, the lock system was designed as an economy lock. To the east of the lock chamber, three staggered collecting basins for the process water were built, the saving basins. The basin enables water to be saved by around 60 percent of the lock water requirement. Only the remaining 40 percent of the required chamber contents are removed from this upper section during a lock to the upper canal section of the Mittelland Canal or drained down into the lower section during a lock. This lost water is replaced by pumping back into the upper section. The upper section of the Mittelland Canal up to the Sülfeld lock has almost no natural tributaries. For this reason, a pumping station with three pumps, each with a delivery rate of 3.5 cubic meters per second, was built next to the lock, which replace the lost water if necessary.
