Schlins is a municipality in the Walgau in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg with 2,481 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

geography

Schlins is located north (right) of the Ill in the Feldkirch district on the northern edge of the Walgau at 502  m above sea level. A. below the Jagdberg ruins. The Giesenbach flows through the southern municipality. 32.7% of the area is forested.

history

The Habsburgs ruled the places in what is now Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria (Freiburg im Breisgau). From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria , then again to the Austrian Empire .

Schlins has belonged to the Austrian Crown Land of Vorarlberg since it was founded in 1861. The place was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955 .

Population development

While the migration balance was still negative in the decade 1981 to 1990, both the birth balance and the migration balance have been positive since then .

  • The parish church of Our Lady Immaculate Conception was already a Hilary church around 821 and the Ecclesia S. Michaelis in Sline et capella S. Mariae around 940 . The current church was consecrated in 1699 and restored in 1781, 1887, 1959 and 1992. In 1963 and 1987 the exterior was restored.
  • The St. Anna chapel in Frommengärsch was built before 1500 and consecrated in 1512.
  • Chapel of St. Johannes Bosco: The chapel was built in 1927 according to a plan by Willibald Braun in the Jagdberg special school.
  • Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary: The chapel in Jupident was built in 1963. It has a hall with a flat vaulted wooden ceiling and concrete glass window and various murals by the Schruns artist Konrad Honold .
  • The Jagdberg castle ruins were probably built in the 12th century. It served as the central castle of the Counts of Montfort-Feldkirch and Feldkirch-Tosters for the rule in the Vorderen Walgau that became independent from the County of Feldkirch in the late 13th century. The interior of the Palas has been used as an open-air stage since 1949.
  • Landessonderschule Jagdberg: In 1908 the ruins were included in the reform home and today's Landesjugendheim Jagdberg by creating a swimming pool in the courtyard. The building was expanded in 1927 according to plans by Willibald Braun .

economy

In 2010 there were fifteen agricultural and forestry operations in Schlins , eight of which were full-time farms. These cultivated 83% of the area. In 2011, 39 companies in the secondary sector (mostly manufacturing of goods and construction) and 108 companies in the tertiary sector, mainly in commerce (24), professional services (25) and social and public services (37), were in the municipality . The companies in the secondary sector employed 468 people, 408 of whom were involved in the manufacture of goods. 446 people were employed in the tertiary sector, more than half of them in social and public services.

education

In the community there is a kindergarten, a primary school and the Jupident state school for children with special social and emotional needs. In the school year 2017/18 there were 110 pupils in the elementary school and 96 children in the Jupident state school.

Schlins shares a stop on the Lindau – Bludenz railway line with Beschling , and S1 trains stop at the station .
