Schnifis is a municipality in Austria in Vorarlberg in the Feldkirch district with 800 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

geography

Schnifis is located in the westernmost state of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the Feldkirch district at an altitude of 657 meters.

It is a scattered settlement on the terrace south of the Schnifner mountain . 37.8% of the area is forested, 14.8% of the area of ​​the Alps.

There are no other cadastral communities in Schnifis.

history

Schnifis was first mentioned in a document in 820 as a Senobium . In 1362 Schnuvis came to Austria together with the Jagdberg lordship .

The Habsburgs ruled the places in what is now Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria (Freiburg im Breisgau). From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria , then again to the Austrian Empire .

Schnifis has belonged to the Austrian crown land of Vorarlberg since it was founded in 1861. The place was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955 .

The municipal council consists of 12 members, all of whom have belonged to the Schnifis village list since the municipal council and mayoral election in 2015 . Anton Mähr was confirmed as mayor in the direct mayor elections in 2015 with 76.73 percent of the votes.

• Fallersee with the whispering mirrors and Bad Schnifis with the water treads.
• The Rheintalhof on Jagdbergstrasse is a knitted wood building on a plastered natural stone base. It originally served as an inn.

Churches and chapels

Parish Church of St. John the Baptist

• Parish Church of St. John the Baptist: Around 830, the ecclesia stood in the place of today's church . A church was consecrated here in 1535 and the nave was extended in 1817. In 1972/73 the church was redesigned.
• Chapel at Bad Schnifis
• The circular wall on the small plateau of the Hausberg-like hill Kobel encloses an early medieval individual courtyard.
• An early medieval clan cemetery has also been found at Gießhübel.

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2010 there were twenty-one agricultural and forestry operations in Schnifis, seven of which were full-time farms . In the secondary economic sector (according to ÖNACE ) in 2011 fifteen companies employed 44 people in the manufacture of goods and in construction. In the tertiary sector, 78 people were employed in 32 companies.

There is a kindergarten and a primary school in the community.
