The company was founded in 1899 by the brothers Paul (born February 27, 1871 in Rostock ) and Otto Fromm (born August 8, 1872 in Rostock, † August 15, 1915 in Berlin ) as a general partnership under the name of "Chemische Fabrik Schwartau" . While artificial honey , cranberry compote and plum jam were produced in the early years , the company also produced jams from 1904. In 1907 a sugar refinery was founded. The Schwartau focused then on the production of fruit-based products.

When the product range was changed in 1912, the company name was changed from the chemical factory to the "Schwartauer Honigwerke und Zuckerraffinerie" . Also in 1912, Schwartau launched its first jam, the Schwartauer five-fruit jam . In 1922 the company was renamed Lübeck praline and jam factory , and in 1924 Mablo-Werke GmbH .

In 1924 the artist Alfred Mahlau designed the trademark of the Schwartauer Werke, the towers of the five churches of Bad Schwartau's neighboring town Lübeck, seen from north to south: Jakobikirche , Marienkirche , Petrikirche , Aegidienkirche and Lübeck Cathedral .

1927 Merger with the Lübeck marzipan and baking mass factory and the Lübeck praline and jam factory to form Schwartauer Werke AG .

1959 Conversion into a GmbH & Co.

In 1962 the company introduced the Schwartau Extra jam .

In 1968 Arend Oetker took over the company as well as the chairmanship of the management of the Schwartauer Werke.

In 1986, Schwartauer Werke acquired a license to use the Mövenpick name for fruit spreads and established it as a premium brand in the German market. In August 2004 the contract was extended long term.

In 1986 the construction of the Schwartau advertising tower began, which was completed in May 1987. To this day, the pylon is the landmark of the Schwartauer Werke.

Since 2002 the Schwartauer Werke have been part of the Swiss food manufacturer Hero , in which Arend Oetker has a majority stake. Since then, the company name has been " Schwartauer Werke GmbH & Co. KGaA ".

In June 2006 a research and development center was opened. In 2012 the company expanded and opened a second jam factory in Bad Schwartau.

Schwartauer Werke has been offering factory sales on the company premises since 2012.

For the production of jams, syrups, dessert sauces and fruit bars, Schwartau primarily purchases its fruit in Europe. In total, around 90 percent of the fruit processed today comes from the European Union . Exotic fruits such as pineapples or mangoes are sourced from countries outside Europe. Around 40 percent of the strawberries were purchased from German contract farmers in 2013.

Schwartau advertising tower

Advertising pylon at the A 1

In the years 1986/1987 the Schwartau built in the immediate vicinity of 1 A at motorway interchange Bad Schwartau ( A 1 / A 226 ) a 50-meter high advertising tower ( "Schwartau advertising tower"). The tower was put into operation in May 1987 and is located on the site of a car dealership.

It is a hexagonal column ( pylon ) with a diameter of 4.50 m made of concrete with a small platform on top on which the logo is located. The logo has a diameter of 10 m. It is illuminated in the dark and rotates from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. (1.6 times per minute). There is a red flight light on the top . Due to its height and the nighttime lighting, the tower can be seen from afar.

Shortly after its completion, the tower - in addition to its function as an advertising medium for the Schwartauer Werke - has also become a landmark for the city of Bad Schwartau thanks to its exposed location .
