history

The National Museum was formed on the basis of the Federal Law on Museums and Collections of the Federal Government (Museum and Collections Law, MSG) of June 12, 2009. The law came into full force on January 1, 2010. It replaced the federal law of June 27, 1890 on the establishment of a Swiss National Museum .

Before the new federal museum policy was implemented in November 2008, three other museums belonged to the Swiss National Museum:

  • The Museum for Music Automatons in Seewen SO houses one of the world's largest and most famous collections of Swiss music boxes, record boxes, clocks and jewelry with musical mechanisms and other mechanical music automatons.
  • The Bärengasse Museum in Zurich, opened in 1976, has since been used by the city authorities as an exhibition building.
  • The Wildegg castle provides insight into the life of the lord of the manor family Effinger and their kitchen and pleasure garden. It was handed over to the canton of Aargau on January 1, 2011.

organization

Organizationally, the Swiss National Museum is subordinate to the Federal Department of Home Affairs . It is chaired by the Museum Council, which consists of seven to nine expert members. The Federal Council elects the President and the other members of the Museum Council. The language groups should be adequately represented in the committee, the term of office is four years. The Museum Council elects a director to act as management. The SNM employs 133 people. An expense of 28,400,000 Swiss francs is offset by a financial return of 4,300,000 Swiss francs. The office of President of the Museum Council is currently held by the former diplomat and politician Tim Guldimann . The director of the SNM is Andreas Spillmann (as of July 2020). The seat is in the National Museum Zurich.
