action

The American journalism student Sondra Pransky is spending her vacation in London , where she is watching a performance by the magician Sid Waterman, who goes under the name "Splendini". She is brought on stage by Sid and integrated into the magic performance. She steps into a "magic" box in which she unexpectedly encounters the ghost of the recently deceased journalist Joe Strombel. He reports that the nobleman Peter Lyman is probably the sought-after “ tarot card killer” who is targeting brunette, short-haired prostitutes . When Sondra tells Sid about it, Sid thinks her crazy until Strombel's ghost reappears - this time in the presence of Sid.

Sondra and Sid then watch Lyman and arrange an encounter with him in his club's swimming pool. Sondra introduces himself to Lyman under the code name "Jade Spence" and lets him invite him to his dinner party. Sid involuntarily slips into the role of her father. They find evidence that incriminates Lyman. His late mother, for example, was also brunette and wore short hair. He also keeps a tarot game in the safe with his musical collection. They later discover that Peter has repeatedly visited a prostitute named Elisabeth Gibson, also known as Betty G., who also appears to have fallen victim to the tarot card killer. However, the police arrest another suspect who confesses.

Meanwhile, Sondra has fallen in love with Peter, while Sid comes across further incriminating evidence when he illuminates the surroundings of the killed Betty G. Peter overhears a phone call in which Sid informs Sondra about these new findings and tries to drown Sondra. Before that, he confesses to her that he murdered Betty G. and wanted to make it look as if this murder was also a burden to the tarot card killer. Using the pretense of a boat accident, Peter calls the police. But Sondra can swim to the bank unnoticed and surprise Peter when he tries to explain the alleged accident to the arriving police. Meanwhile, Sid, an American who cannot cope with left-hand traffic in Great Britain, has a fatal car accident on the way to see Sondra and Peter.

Peter Lyman is convicted of the murder and Sondra publishes her first major article in the newspaper. On the way to the afterlife, Sid wants to show the deceased people on the boat a card trick. He asks if there is still time to show one of his magic tricks, to which one of the fellow travelers replies: "I think all eternity!"

Reviews

Jonathan Rosenbaum criticized the comedy in the Chicago Reader as " lame ". Heike Maleschka, on the other hand, praised her as " funny and witty ".

The lexicon of international films wrote: “ Highly amusing drama by Woody Allen, borne by pointed dialogues and successful situation comedy, against the background of a satirically sketched class society in which corpses are also walked over in order to preserve status and privileges. "

Stefan Höltgen from F.LM - Texts on the Film praised the film and its actors: “ The combination of fantastic, comic and thriller elements enriches Allen's new film immensely - it actually makes it an exceptional work in his oeuvre. Added to this are the good acting performances of Hugh Jackman and Scarlett Johansson. [...] [Allen] himself appears again in front of the camera and shows that even as a 70-year-old he has lost none of his acting skills. The reunion with him - especially as a father figure at the side of Scarlett Johansson - is one of the cinema highlights of the year. "

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
