The Sleeper (Original title: Sleeper ) is an American science fiction film parody from 1973 by and with Woody Allen .

action

Miles Monroe, jazz musician and owner of the vegetarian restaurant “To the happy carrot” on Broadway in the 1970s, is put into an artificial deep sleep after a failed gastric ulcer operation . 200 years later, it is brought back to life by a team of scientists. The world has changed a lot since then. Technology has advanced enormously, but saturated fats have been analyzed as healthy, sex is only possible with the help of gadgets, and a dictatorial leader controls the fortunes of the state - a world in which Miles Monroe finds his way around. The scientists belong to the opposition and want to use Miles for their own purposes. Suddenly the police appear and take the scientists prisoner. Miles can escape. He disguises himself as a robot butler in order to remain undetected. He gets to know Luna and reveals himself to her as a person. First she betrays him to the police. However, when the police also want to liquidate her, she takes Miles' side. Both flee and fall in love. Miles is arrested, brainwashed and part of the system. He is later freed by rebels. The rebels subject him to trauma therapy. Luna has meanwhile also been turned around and wants to support the revolution. Miles, after all, still fulfills the purpose for which the scientists awakened him: to help the revolution win. Disguised as a doctor, he learns that the dictator has in truth already died. Only his nose could be kept alive artificially. A new dictator is to be cloned from this. Miles prevents the dictator from being cloned by running his nose flat with a steamroller. In the end, Miles and Luna reassure each other of their love and Miles prophesies that the new government will not get any better than the old one.
