The American Film Institute ( AFI ) is an independent, non-profit US organization based in Hollywood , Los Angeles . It was brought into being in 1965 by a mandate from then American President Lyndon B. Johnson and founded in 1967.

The institute has three main objectives:

  • Guarantee the legacy of American film
  • promote the education of the next generation of filmmakers
  • to honor the artists and their work

The institute's motto is derived from this: to honor, preserve and educate - to honor, preserve and educate.

history

Today's AFI campus in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Supported by the National Endowment for the Arts , the Motion Picture Association of America, and the Ford Foundation , the American Film Institute was established in 1967 to record the nation's film products , preserve American film heritage , and promote the advancement of cinematic art to investigate the effects of media on society. The institute is financed through donations from private individuals and through memberships.

The first, 22-member board of directors was chaired by actor Gregory Peck and by actor Sidney Poitier as vice chairman. Other members were the director Francis Ford Coppola , the film historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. and the lobbyist Jack Valenti, as well as other representatives of the art and academic circles.

In the early years, a training program for filmmakers (The Center for Advanced Film Studies) was developed. Over the years, the program has developed into the renowned AFI Conservatory. The original “Presentation of Authors' Films” has developed into the two film festivals AFI Fest and AFI Docs . The institute moved to its current campus in downtown Hollywood in 1981.

Field of activity

AFI's field of activity includes:

  • AFI Life Achievement Award - a tradition since 1973 and a prestigious award for a career in film
  • AFI Conservatory - two year Masters program led by experienced filmmakers
  • AFI Directing Workshop for Women - a production-based program for professional female film directors
  • AFI Film Festivals - AFI Fest & AFI Docs
  • AFI Awards - a tribute to creative collaboration and the most successful film and television productions of the year
  • AFI Catalog of Feature Films and AFI Archive - the written genesis of all films over the first 100 years of the film art form, accessible online for free
  • AFI 100 Years ... - Reference Lists for Notable Films
  • AFI Silver Theater and Cultural Center - a historic cinema with a classic and modern film program
  • American Film - formerly a magazine about the art of film, now a blog on AFI.com

AFI Conservatory

The American Film Institute (AFI) established the Center for Advanced Film Studies in 1969 . The very first classes were attended by filmmakers Terrence Malick , Caleb Deschanel and Paul Schrader , among others . The film program developed over the years into the renowned AFI Conservatory, in the center of Hollywood, Los Angeles.

The Conservatory now offers six Master of Fine Arts courses: cinematography, film directing, editing, production, production design and screenwriting. The training focuses strongly on the practical experience of filmmaking and reflects real production conditions. The students, who are often already experienced in film, - the so-called AFI Fellows - produce more films over two years than any other master’s program. Admission to the film school is very selective and only takes place at the invitation of the faculty, with a maximum of 140 students per year.

In 2013, Emmy and Oscar-winning director, producer and writer James L. Brooks ( As Good as It Gets , Broadcast News , The Simpsons ) joined the AFI Conservatory as Artistic Director. He succeeded Daniel Petrie , Jr., Robert Wise and Frank Pierson . Since 2017 the school has been under the direction of producer Richard Gladstein .

The American Film Institute Conservatory regularly takes top positions in the ranking of the best international film schools.

See: Main article AFI Life Achievement Award With the AFI Life Achievement Award, the American Film Institute (AFI) honors the life's work of filmmakers who have made significant contributions to the advancement of film art . The award was established by the Board of Directors of the American Film Institute in 1973. The recipient is honored at an annual celebration at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

AFI 100 Years ... lists

The following lists, which the institute has published since 1998 on the occasion of the centenary of American film, attracted a great deal of attention. AFI honored the most outstanding aspects of American film history.

100 Movies - The 100 Best American Movies of All Time

Note: The AFI interprets the selection criteria for "American" films very broadly. An American financier or American actor, among others, is sufficient, even if the film is otherwise a purely British production.

100 Years of Musicals - The 25 most important American musical films

Released September 3, 2006

10 Greatest Films in 10 Classic Genres - The 10 Greatest Films in 10 Classic Genres

On June 17, 2008, the ten best films in ten classic American film genres were selected in a three-hour television show on CBS . The most successful director is Alfred Hitchcock , whose films appear four times on the lists, followed by Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick (three each). The most common actors in the films listed are James Stewart (6 films) and Diane Keaton (4).

The jury consisted of 1,500 members, including filmmakers, critics and historians. They chose from a list of 500 American productions (50 per genre) released before January 1, 2008. The selection was based on critical reception (film awards; recommendations in printed and digital media as well as television), popularity (economic success at the box office, broadcast dates on television, DVD and VHS sales or rental income), historical significance (highlighting feature of film history through e.g. B. a visionary narrative narrative structure or technical innovation) and cultural meaning (characterizing American society in terms of style and content).
