Scott Edgar Mellanby (born June 11, 1966 in Montréal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach as well as current official who played 1565 games for the Philadelphia Flyers , Edmonton Oilers , Florida during his active career between 1984 and 2007 Panthers , St. Louis Blues and Atlanta Thrashers played in the National Hockey League on the right winger position . Mellanby, who embodied the grinder player type , was team captain of the Florida Panthers for four years and the Atlanta Thrashers for two years.

Career

Scott Mellanby began his career in the MTJHL and was selected in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round at position 27. He then went to the University of Wisconsin – Madison , where he played for their ice hockey team for two years. At the end of the sophomore year he came to his first two appearances in the National Hockey League .

From the 1986/87 season he was a regular for the Flyers and was able to move into the Stanley Cup finals with them that season , where they were subject to the Edmonton Oilers . In the 1989/90 season he occurred for a long time because he was seriously injured in a bar fight when he wanted to help a friend. With a broken beer bottle, he made a deep cut in his arm that severed four tendons, a nerve, and an artery. In the hospital, permanent damage could be prevented with an operation, but Mellanby was on the verge of having his arm amputated.

In 1991 he was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers, for whom he played two years. In the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft , he was not banned by the Oilers, so he was selected by the Florida Panthers . There he had the best time of his career. He became a crowd favorite when he killed a rat with his hockey stick in the team dressing room. When it became public, fans threw plastic rats on the ice every time the Panthers scored. The best season of his career Mellanby had in the 1995/96 season when he scored 70 points and came with the Panthers to the Stanley Cup final, where they lost to the Colorado Avalanche . He also got his first and only participation in the NHL All-Star Game .

In 1997 he became team captain of the Panthers and remained so until he was transferred to the St. Louis Blues in 2001 . After his point yield went downhill over the years, he was able to pull himself up again in St. Louis and achieved another 57 points in 2002/03 . After the failure of the 2004/05 NHL season , he did not receive a new contract from the Blues, which is why he moved to the Atlanta Thrashers , who named him directly as team captain. In the summer of 2006 he received a new one-year contract in Atlanta. In the 2006/07 season , Mellanby again showed a solid performance with 36 points and, together with his young teammates, such as Marián Hossa , Ilja Kowaltschuk and Kari Lehtonen , led the Thrashers into the playoffs for the first time in their history. But there they were clearly defeated by the New York Rangers in four games. A few weeks later, Mellanby ended his career at the age of 40. At the end of his career, he was among the active players with 1,431 games, the second most games. Despite the large number of games played, he could never win the Stanley Cup. Only Mike Gartner (1,432 games) and Phil Housley (1,495 games) were more often in the NHL without having won the Stanley Cup.

After retiring, Mellanby worked as an expert on the ice hockey show Hockey Night in Canada during the 2007/08 season , which his father Ralph Mellanby ran for a long time as executive producer. In May 2008, Mellanby joined the Vancouver Canucks where he was an advisor to General Manager Mike Gillis . On June 1, 2010 it was announced that he will take over the position of assistant coach at his former club, the St. Louis Blues, from the 2010/11 season. Together with the two ice hockey goalkeepers Olaf Kölzig and Byron Dafoe , he is a founding member of Athletes Against Autism , an organization of athletes who are affected by autism in their families or friends . Mellanby's son Carter has a developmental disorder. After working as a scout and consultant for the Vancouver Canucks after his year at HNIC , he worked as an assistant coach for his ex-team from St. Louis between 2010 and 2012. Since 2012 he has been working for the Canadiens de Montréal from his hometown. Initially he was Director of Player Personnel there for two years and has been Assistant General Manager since 2014.
