Derek MacKenzie (born June 11, 1981 in Greater Sudbury , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach . During his playing career, the center played over 600 games for the Atlanta Thrashers , Columbus Blue Jackets and Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League . With the Panthers, which he led as team captain from 2016 to 2018 , he has been working as an assistant coach since June 2019.
Career
Derek MacKenzie began his career as a hockey player in his hometown with the Sudbury Wolves , for whom he was active from 1997 to 2001 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League . During this period he was selected in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round as a total of 128th player by the Atlanta Thrashers . From 2001 to 2007, the center was a regular on the Thrashers farm team for the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League . His biggest success with the Chicago Wolves was winning the Calder Cup in the 2001/02 season . At the same time, he was occasionally used as a supplementary player for the Atlanta Thrashers in the National Hockey League .
On July 11, 2007 MacKenzie signed a contract as a free agent with the Columbus Blue Jackets . In the first three years in the Ohio franchise , he played mostly for their AHL farm team Syracuse Crunch and only sporadically for Columbus in the NHL. In the 2010/11 season , the Canadian spent a full season in the NHL for the first time in his career, scoring 23 points in 63 games, including nine goals, for the Blue Jackets.
After seven years in Columbus, he left the Blue Jackets and joined the Florida Panthers in July 2014 , whose team captain he became at the start of the 2016/17 season . He handed this position over to Aleksander Barkov before the start of the 2018/19 season before he was out for almost the entire season due to a shoulder injury. This subsequently also meant the end of his active career, which he officially announced in April 2019. In total, he had played 623 NHL games and recorded 127 points scorer. The Canadian stayed with the Panthers by joining the coaching staff in June 2019 as assistant to head coach Joel Quenneville .

For Canada MacKenzie took part in the U20 Junior World Championship in 2001 , where he won the bronze medal with his team.
