The Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista

The Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista was one of the six great schools , the Scuole grandi in the Republic of Venice .

history

The scuola was founded in 1261 and was initially located near Sant'Aponal in the sestiere of San Polo . In 1307 it was moved to San Giovanni Evangelista north of the Frari Church . The school was closed in 1806, but subsequently rebuilt and still exists.

The building of the Scuola was rebuilt around 1480 in the style of the Venetian early Renaissance. During this time the small farm (Campiello) was created. Its walls have a fluted pilaster structure . The entrance is adorned by a portal probably designed by Mauro Codussi (others suspect Pietro Lombardo ), which is crowned by a lunette . Codussi also created the two-flight staircase leading to a platform and the hall on the ground floor with two rows of columns and the "Ghibelline window". The platform above the stairs is crowned by a dome.

The oratory on the upper floor, behind the assembly room, had a cycle of paintings by Gentile Bellini , Vittore Carpaccio , Lazarro Bastiani, Giovanni Mansueti and Benedetto Diana, which is now in the Accademia . The cross reliquary itself is still in the possession of the brotherhood and is displayed on the altar in a version from the end of the 14th century.
