Selena Marie Gomez (born July 22, 1992 in Grand Prairie , Texas ) is an American actress , singer , model , voice actress and film producer .

Gomez's career began with a role in the television series Barney and Friends in 2002. Her breakthrough came with the Disney Channel series The Wizards of Waverly Place , in which she played the role of the protagonist Alex Russo. Gomez has guest appearances in other series such as Hannah Montana , Zack & Cody on board and Sonny Munroe and has appeared in well-known films, including Another Cinderella Story , Princesses Protection Program , Suddenly Star and Spring Breakers .

Gomez began her music career in 2008 when she signed a record deal with Hollywood Records . To date, she has released three studio albums that have been awarded gold records in several countries . As a singer, she also contributed the soundtrack to various film and television productions, including Tinker Bell and Shake It Up - dancing is everything .

In 2009, Gomez became the youngest UNICEF - ambassador appointed. From 2009 to 2012 she took part in the Disney Friends for Change project , an environmental protection initiative of the Walt Disney Company .

Life

Gomez was born on July 22, 1992, the only child of the Italian-American Amanda Dawn Teefey (née Cornett) and the Mexican Ricardo Joel Gomez. She grew up with her mother in Grand Prairie , Texas since her parents divorced when she was five years old. Gomez was on the Tex-Mex singer Selena named and started early with the theater spectacle . She has two younger half-sisters.

In a 2009 interview with People magazine , Gomez said that she developed an interest in acting early on because she watched her mother practice and play in theater productions. In May 2010 she successfully completed her private tuition.

In January 2014, Gomez spent two weeks at the Dawn at the Meadows facility , which treats young people between the ages of 18 and 28 for addictions and mental injuries. In the fall of 2015, her autoimmune disease lupus erythematosus, diagnosed in 2013, became public knowledge. As a result of this illness, she suffered depression and panic attacks, which forced Gomez to cancel her world tour in 2016. In September 2017, she announced that she had received a kidney donation from her friend Francia Raisa .

Selena Gomez was in a relationship with Nick Jonas from 2008 to 2010 and with Justin Bieber from 2010 to 2013 , each with an interim separation . From late 2014 to May 2015, Gomez had a relationship with the Russian-German music producer and DJ Zedd . She dated Canadian singer The Weeknd from early 2017 to late October 2017 . After the two separated, a new relationship with Justin Bieber followed at the end of 2017 in early 2018, but the two separated a short time later.

Career

Acting career

She played her first role in the television series Barney and Friends , where she met Demi Lovato after she was discovered at the age of ten in a talent contest organized by Disney. Since then she has appeared in various television series, mostly in Disney productions such as Hotel Zack and Cody and for several episodes Hannah Montana .

From 2007 she played a leading role in the Disney series The Wizard of Waverly Place , to which she also sang the theme song Everything Is Not What It Seems . The series started on the Disney Channel in America in October 2007 and ended there in January 2012.

In 2009 she replaced Madonna in Arthur and the Minimoys 2 - The Return of Evil M , who lent her voice to Princess Selenia in the first part . In its second sequel Arthur and the Minimoys 3 - The Great Decision , Gomez gave Princess Selenia her voice again. In 2010 she starred in the role of Beezus Quimby in Sister Hearts - Ramona's Wild World , based on the Beverly Cleary novel Beezus and Ramona . That same year she was cast in the role of Grace Bennett in Suddenly a Star .

Gomez also starred alongside Vanessa Hudgens , James Franco and Ashley Benson in the film Spring Breakers .

Gomez hosted the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto on June 19, 2011 and the MTV Europe Music Awards in Belfast on November 6, 2011 . In 2012, Gomez starred alongside Eli Roth in a cameo for the Chilean disaster thriller Aftershock - Hell after the quake . Also in 2012 she received the role of The Kid in the action movie Getaway alongside Ethan Hawke and Jon Voight . The film opened in American cinemas in August 2013. In early April 2013 she landed the role of Kate Ann Lucas in the musical Rudderless . The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2014. In the summer of 2014 the film Behaving Badly was released with Gomez in the leading role of Nina Pennington .

At the beginning of 2015, she shot the drama Detour home alongside Paul Rudd , in which she can be seen as Dot . The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in late January 2016 . In the same year, Gomez played the role of Madison in the comedy Bad Neighbors 2 , the sequel to the 2014 Bad Neighbors, alongside Zac Efron , Seth Rogen and Chloë Grace Moretz . Already in 2015 she received a leading role in the feature film Stormy Harvest - In Dubious Battle, produced by and with James Franco . The film is based on the novel of the same name by John Steinbeck and tells the story of fruit pickers in the 1930s who wanted to defend themselves against poor working conditions in California.

In 2017 Gomez starred in the feature film A Rainy Day in New York, directed by Woody Allen , alongside Timothée Chalamet . 2018 she took on a role alongside Bill Murray and Adam Driver in the horror comedy The Dead Do not Die of Jim Jarmusch that came with June 2019 in the cinemas.

2007–2012: First experiences with music and founding of the band Selena Gomez & the Scene

In 2007 she recorded the theme song Everything Is Not What It Seems for her hit Disney series The Wizards of Waverly Place .

In 2008 Gomez covered the song Cruella de Vil by Bill Lee, which appeared on the album DisneyMania6. She also recorded a music video. In the same year she recorded the song Fly to Your Heart for the film Tinker Bell and the title Tell Me Something I Don't Know for the film Another Cinderella Story . She released a music video for both songs. Also in 2008 she founded the band Selena Gomez & the Scene , with whom she has released three studio albums. The debut album Kiss & Tell was in the top ten of the US charts and in several other countries in the top 20. The hit single Naturally was Gomez's first platinum single.

In 2009, she and her friend Demi Lovato recorded the song One and the Same for their joint film Princesses Protection Program , which appeared on the soundtrack of the same name. For the soundtrack of The Wizard of Waverly Place , she also covered the song Magic by the band Pilot . In the same year she took part in the Disney Friends for Change project , where she also recorded the song Send It On with Miley Cyrus , Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers . In 2010 she also took on a role in the video clip for the song Burnin 'Up by the Jonas Brothers.

In 2010, Gomez's second studio album, A Year Without Rain, was released . The album reached the top five on the American Billboard charts in its first week . The album got off to a successful start in many other countries.

A year later, Gomez released her third album When the Sun Goes Down with the band The Scene . The first single from it, Who Says , sold around 3 million copies and went platinum three times in the US. The second single, Love You Like a Love Song, sold 4 million copies, making it Gomez and The Scenes' most successful single. The album itself made it to number 3 in America and was also successful worldwide. All three studio albums were awarded gold in the USA.

January 2012, Gomez announced a temporary hiatus in her musical career to focus on acting. At the end of the same year, she announced the separation from her band The Scene .

2013–2014: Solo album Stars Dance and first world tour

After breaking up with her band The Scene, Gomez released her first own single, Come and Get It, in April 2013 . She sang this song live for the first time on April 14, 2013 at the MTV Movie Awards . The song rose to number six on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and went platinum three times. The accompanying album Stars Dance reached number one on the Billboard charts. The album reached number four in Germany. In early June 2013, Gomez's second solo single Slow Down was released , which made it to number 27 on the charts. After the album, Gomez started her first world tour, Stars Dance Tour , which took her through North America and Europe from August to November 2013. In December 2013, Gomez canceled the concerts planned for Australia and Asia for health reasons.

She has been under contract with the record label Interscope Records since September 2014 .

In early November 2014, Gomez announced a new song and a best-of album. A few days later the single The Heart Wants What It Wants was released . The song made it to number 6 in the American charts, making it Gomez's second top 10 hit after Come & Get It . On November 24, 2014, the best-of album For You was released , which ends her contract with the Hollywood Records label.

2015–2016: Second solo album Revival

In late 2014 and early 2015, Selena Gomez recorded the song I Want You to Know with Zedd , which was released on February 23, 2015. The music video for the single was shot in Los Angeles in early February. The song is Zedd's first single from his second solo album, True Colors .

At the end of June 2015, the first single Good for You was released in collaboration with A $ AP Rocky . The song rose to number five on the US singles chart. The second solo album Revival was released on October 9, 2015. The second single was Same Old Love , which also rose to number five in the single charts. The third and fourth singles were Hands to Myself and Kill Em with Kindness .

In May 2016, Gomez began her World Tour Revival Tour . She had to stop doing this in August 2016 due to her lupus disease. The planned concert in Germany was therefore canceled.

Since 2017: Third solo album Rare

In February 2017 the single It Ain't Me , a collaboration with Norwegian DJ and producer Kygo , was released. With this single Gomez reached the top 10 of the charts for the first time in German-speaking countries, in Germany it reached number 3.

In the summer of 2017, Gomez released two more singles: Bad Liar and Fetish both made it into the Billboard charts, but fell short of expectations. In October, Gomez released the single Wolves with DJ Marshmello .

In the summer of 2018, her single Back To You was released as an official soundtrack for the series " Dead Girls Don't Lie " by being a producer on the series. In the fall of Latin American song came Taki Taki by DJ Snake out by Selena Gomez on vocals part with Ozuna and Cardi B participated. The music video received a billion views on YouTube in four months and ranked # 1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. Furthermore, in February 2019 she released the song I Can't Get Enough with benny blanco , Tainy and J Balvin .

After eight months, Gomez released the singles Lose You To Love Me and Look At Her Now in October 2019 . Lose You To Love Me became their first single, which reached # 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart .

On January 10th, 2020 her third studio album " Rare " was released. Her song Rare was released as a single with a music video on the same day.
