Sencer Şahin

Sencer Şahin (born May 11, 1939 in Elbistan , Maraş , † October 16, 2014 in Turkey ) was a Turkish classical philologist and epigraphist .

Life

Şahin studied Classical Philology at Ankara University from 1963 to 1967 and graduated with a degree . From 1969 to 1973 he completed a doctoral degree at the University of Münster . In 1973 he received his doctorate there with a dissertation on the new finds of ancient inscriptions in Nicomedeia ( İzmit ) and in the vicinity of the city . Since 1981 he has been a lecturer and since 1986 professor at Akdeniz University in Antalya . At the same time, he worked closely with Reinhold Merkelbach and his group of researchers at the Institute for Classical Studies at the University of Cologne and with Elmar Schwertheim and the Asia Minor research center at the University of Münster.

Research focus

Şahin's research focus was the epigraphy of Greek cities in Asia Minor . He has contributed several volumes to the series of inscriptions of Greek cities from Asia Minor . With Ekrem Akurgal , Reinhold Merkelbach and Hermann Vetters he is one of the founders of the journal Epigraphica Anatolica (Habelt, Bonn, 1983 ff.). With Johannes Nollé he founded the magazine Gephyra. Journal for the history and culture of antiquity in the area of ​​today's Turkey ( Turkish : Günümüz Türki̇yesi̇ʼnin anti̇k devi̇rʼdeki̇ tari̇hi̇ ve kältürü i̇çi̇n dergi̇ ; Istanbul, 2004 ff.).
