Localization of Canton Ticino in Switzerland

The Monte San Salvatore transmitter is the most important FM transmitter in Ticino . It is located on Monte San Salvatore , 901 meters above sea level. He uses an 80 meter high, free-standing steel lattice tower that was erected in 1957 as the antenna carrier.

The Monte San Salvatore transmitter went into operation for the first time on November 29, 1958 and initially broadcast the television program and the second radio program on VHF of the RSI . On October 7, 1960, a second VHF transmitter followed for the first program. The Italian RAI has been using the site since November 28, 1960, in particular to supply the Campione exclave and the northern shore of Lake Lugano from the Swiss border to Porlezza .

history

In the mid-1950s, the Uetliberg transmitter began the first attempts at television connections in Switzerland. At this time, the canton of Ticino can only receive the Italian television programs. Therefore, in 1955, the PTT General Directorate decided to connect the Ticino broadcasting systems so that they could also receive Swiss television - at that time a major challenge in the mountainous Ticino. A pilot project was carried out from the end of November 1958: the Monte San Salvatore television system served the regions south of Monte Ceneri and Mendrisio. Mainly because of the simultaneous reception of Italian broadcasts, there are often disruptions and the demands of the Ticino population for their own programs are increasing. Between 1960 and 1968, the transmission system was expanded so that the first RSI (Radiotelelevisione svizzera di lingua italiana) program could be broadcast throughout the canton. In 1968 the 60 meter high first mast was replaced by one that was 86 meters high.

In 1972, construction began to set up a multi-purpose facility on the San Salvatore. It corresponds to the norms for normalized regional stations of medium size, like the already portrayed Valzeina transmitter. After the inauguration in 1974, the multi-purpose system Monte San Salvatore broadcasts the three Swiss television programs (initially only in the Sottoceneri), the two Ticino radio programs and two RAI television programs. Depending on the region, additional systems are required to be able to receive these programs. In 2003 the television digitization project DVB-T finally began, in 2006 the conversion to digital radio DAB and later DAB +.
