Josef "Sepp" Jöchler (born May 6, 1923 in Landeck ; † 1994 ) was a mountaineer from Tyrol , Austria.

Life

Sepp Jöchler was born in Landeck and trained as a master builder . With his brother Hans he succeeded in climbing the Rugglespitze-Ostwand in 1951, the first ascent of a route in VI. Difficulty level in the Verwall group . In 1952, together with Hermann Buhl , he was able to record the 8th ascent of the Eiger north face in the most adverse conditions . A year later he also climbed the north face of the Matterhorn for the 8th time .

On October 19, 1954, he and Herbert Tichy and the Sherpa Pasang Dawa Lama were the first to stand on the summit of the 8188 m high Cho Oyu , the sixth highest mountain on earth. Due to the slim style and the lack of bottled oxygen , this expedition is considered a milestone in high-altitude mountaineering .

The connecting path between the Darmstädter Hütte and the Niederelbehütte in the Verwall group is named after Jöchler .
